SDSU tops Omaha in five-set thriller at Baxter Arena
BROOKINGS, S.D. - South Dakota State extended its Summit League unbeaten streak to 11 matches Thursday night with a five-set victory over Omaha at Baxter Arena. This is the Jackrabbits' second five-set win over the Mavericks this season.
Set scores against the Mavericks went 23-25, 25-14, 25-18, 19-25, 15-11. The Jackrabbits improve to 17-3 overall and 11-0 in conference play while the Mavericks drop to 7-13 on the year and 4-7 in the Summit League.
Sophomore middle blocker Madison Burr had a standout night for the Jackrabbits. Burr tallied 15 kills while hitting .414 and tallied nine blocks (eight assists, one solo), six digs and three ace serves. She had two kills and an ace during a 9-0 SDSU run in the third set.
Sylvie Zgonc also had a solid night, contributing 20 kills to go with eight digs and six blocks (five assists, one solo). Hannah Klein also reached double figures with 13 kills and had four digs and three block assists. Sydni Schetnan added nine kills, three block assists and two solo blocks.
Setter Rylee Martin directed the offense with 53 assists on the night as the Jackrabbits hit .232 as a team. Martin also tallied a team-high 14 digs and had three kills. After Martin, Rachel Wieber and Joslyn Richardson matched Zgonc's eight digs. Maggie Meister had six.
South Dakota State posted an edge in total kills (61-55), blocks (15-9) and service aces (7-4). The Jackrabbits also recorded a higher hitting percentage (.232 to .178) and committed fewer attack errors (25 to 28).
Omaha's Kali Jurgensmeier tallied 21 digs and 15 kills to lead all players in both categories. Alizabeth Jacobsen posted a .533 hitting percentage with 10 kills on 15 errorless swings.
Set one: SDSU opened the match with back-to-back kills from Zgonc and Burr to take a 2-0 lead. Omaha responded with a 5-0 run, fueled by two kills from Jurgensmeier and a pair of SDSU attack errors. SDSU worked back to tie the set at 14 and again at 20 behind kills from Klein and Burr, however Omaha made the push to edge out the set. Jurgensmeier led all players with six kills in the frame.
Set two: The Jackrabbits jumped out to a 6-3 lead behind a trio of kills and a block from Zgonc. As Omaha struggled to find its rhythm, SDSU extended its lead to 19-9 with a se rvice ace from Richardson and a block from Zgonc and Burr. Brooke Larsen checked in at 24–14 to deliver the set-winning ace. The Jackrabbits hit .400 in the set and held Omaha to .000.
Set three: SDSU opened the third set with a 4-1 run that included kills from Schetnan, Zgonc and Annalee Ventlig-Brown. The Jackrabbits then went off for a 9-0 run, sparked by Burr's back-to-back kills. Klein added two kills during the stretch. Omaha made a late push but could not overcome the double-digit deficit. SDSU hit .419 in the third set.
Set four: Set four was tightly contested to begin with with six tie scores but no lead changes. The Mavericks took the first lead and did not give up for the entire set. A 5-0 Omaha run helped the home team extend its lead to 20-15 and the Mavs closed out the set to force set five.
Set five: The Jackrabbits took a commanding 4-0 lead with kills from Zgonc and Burr, then and a block from the duo. Richard's put down an ace to cap the run. SDSU led 8-4 at the side change. Schetnan put down a couple kills that put SDSU up 12-9. Zgonc delivered SDSU's final two kills to win the fifth 15-11.
NOTES
SDSU is 3-1 in five-set matches this season. Two of those victories have come against Omaha.
