STANFORD, Calif. - The South Dakota State volleyball team won the first NCAA Tournament set in program history Friday evening but fell 3-1 to Arizona in the opening round at Maples Pavilion.
Set scores against the Wildcats went 21-25, 25-22, 15-25, 15-25. South Dakota State ends the year with a 23-5 overall record while Arizona advances to the second round with a 17-12 mark.
Sylvie Zgonc was a bright spot for the Jackrabbits. The junior notched 21 kills and had only three errors on the night for the .375 hitting percentage. With 14 digs, she tallied her 14th double-double of the season.
Sydni Schetnan hit .385 for the match with five kills on 13 errorless swings. The redshirt senior also notched a team-high four block assists.
Madison Burr had eight kills but 10 errors.
Joslyn Richardson paced the Jackrabbits' defense with 16 digs, which tied for the match high. Richardson put down three ace serves, bringing her season total to an SDSU-record 41.
Rachel Wieber added 13 digs.
Arizona's Jordan Wilson notched 24 kills, 11 digs and five block assists. She was joined in double figures by Carlie Cisneros (18 kills) and Sydni Vanek (10 kills).
The Wildcats had a 70-42 advantage in kills. SDSU outscored Arizona on the block (10-6) and aces (5-3).
Set one: The first set was never out of reach for SDSU. Down 22-15 late, SDSU scored the next six to make it a one-point game. Zgonc had four kills in that run, then Arizona scored the final three points of the set.
Set two: South Dakota State jumped out to an 8-0 lead on the serve of Richardson. Richardson had one ace, plus Burr had two blocks and a kill in that stretch. Arizona worked all the way back to within three at 13-10, then the Jackrabbits scored the next three with another ace from Richardson. The Wildcats cut the deficit to one at 19-18, but a Martin ace paired with two Arizona errors helped the Jacks pull away again. Another Zgonc kill won the set for the Jacks and tied the match at 1-1.
Set three: Arizona steadily pulled away from SDSU over the beginning of the third set, then a 4-0 Wildcat stretch made it 19-11. The Wildcats won the set 25-15.
Set four: Burr notched the first two kills of the fourth set, but Arizona quickly went ahead and maintained its lead. SDSU scored three straight to come within five at 15-10, but the Wildcats won handily, 25-15.

- Sylvie Zgonc's 21 kills is the most by a Jackrabbit in NCAA Tournament match in SDSU's three Division I appearances. She also holds second place on that list with nine against Miami in 2024.
