Las Vegas, Nev. - Five Jackrabbits advanced to day two of the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational after a hard-fought Friday in Vegas.
The Espinoza-Owens twins both finished their day undefeated as they advanced to the semi-finals of the 165 and 174-pound brackets.Â
After an opening round bye, Marcus Espinoza-Owens put together a decision win over Ryan Burgos from Edinboro and followed it up with a 15-2 major decision over Brandon Abdon from Rider to secure his spot in the semi-finals.
Moses Espinoza-Owens put together a tech fall in his round of 32 matchup and followed it up with a MD in his round of 16 bout. In his quarterfinal match, he took on No. 12 overall and 3-seed Beau Mantanona from Michigan. After giving up a takedown in the first, Espinoza-Owens rallied back, scoring a takedown of his own and riding out Mantanona in the second, before stifling his offense in the third to secure a 5-4 decision and a spot in the semis.
Alongside the Espinoza-Owens brothers, Derrick Cardinal, Alek Martin and Luke Rasmussen all secured their spots on the podium by battling on Friday night.Â
Martin returned to action for the first time since the Tiger Style Invite in November. He scored an 8-0 major decision in his opening bout and followed it up with a 15-10 back-and-forth decision win over Wyoming's Gabe Willochell in the round of 16. Unfortunately, Martin would run into the No. 2 wrestler in the country and 1-seed Kaleb Larkin in the quarters. Martin was unable to score a takedown on Larkin and dropped a tight decision, 3-7. But he would bounce back in his next bout, taking home an 8-2 decision and securing a spot on the podium.Â
Derrick Cardinal made his season debut with the Jacks, taking over the 133-pound spot. He would make quick work of his round of 32 opponent Evin Gursoy, scoring a 9-2 decision before dropping his round of 16 match to Luke Willochell, 3-9. But Cardinal caught his second wind in the consolation bracket, putting together two decision wins over Calvin Werden and Robert Jones before accepting a medical forfeit from Tyler Knox, securing his spot on the podium.
Luke Rasmussen, fresh off an upset win against No. 13 Koy Hopke, scored a 7-2 decision in his round of 16 match over Utah Valley's Jack Forbes, but was stopped by 5-seed Cal Poly's Trevor Tinker in the quarters by decision. Luke bounced back and scored a pin over Tristan Kemp to find his spot on the podium and continue his run into day two of the Cliff Keen Invitational.
