South Dakota State gears up to play its second game of the week as the Jackrabbits travel to Vermillion to take on the Coyotes at 1 p.m. on Sunday. SDSU and USD meet for their second matchup of the season which is part of the Interstate Series, presented by First Interstate Bank.Â
SDSU and South Dakota previously battled this year in Brookings on Jan. 25. The Jackrabbits controlled the contest from the tipoff. South Dakota state led by as many as 22 in the first half and 25 in the second half on its way to claiming a 90-71 victory. The contest was played in front of a First Bank & Trust Arena record 4,764 spectators.Â
That matchup saw five Jackrabbits score in double digits.
Kalen Garry scored 19 points & grabbed a career-high nine rebounds. Freshmen
Owen Larson and
Stoney Hadnot poured in then career highs of 18 and 14 points, respectively.
Oscar Cluff recorded a double-double to go along with a career-high seven assists.
The Jackrabbits are 17-9 overall and 8-3 in conference play after Thursday's 98-85 victory over league-leading Omaha. SDSU was carried by Cluff's 17th double-double of the season featuring 25 points and 15 rebounds. He also had six assists while he was followed in the score column by
Joe Sayler (19) and Larson (18).Â
It was the second straight week SDSU knocked off a team atop The Summit League standings at home. The Jacks beat St. Thomas, 102-86, the previous Thursday behind a 61-point second half. It was the first time SDSU scored more than 60 in a half since 2018.
The Jackrabbits are now the top scoring team in conference play among league members averaging 85.3 points through 11 games. SDSU is also second in scoring defense, allowing 74.6 points to opponents. Cluff leads all conference players in rebounding (14.2) and field goal percentage (60.9%). He averages a team-best 17.6 points. He's followed in scoring during conference play by Sayler (14.7), Garry (13.9) and Larson (11.5).Â
South Dakota is in the midst of a four-game win streak. The Coyotes are 16-10 (7-4). They are 12-1 at home this year with their lone loss a 103-77 defeat to North Dakota State on Jan. 18.
