BROOKINGS, S.D. – South Dakota State completed multiple rallies and eventually found a way to earn a 6-5 victory over South Dakota on Thursday, May 8, in the second round of the Summit League Softball Championship at Jerald T. Moriarty Field. The Jackrabbits defeated the Coyotes after a lengthy 13-inning game to advance into the winner's bracket of the conference tournament.Â

SDSU held a 1-0 lead through the first innings thanks to a stellar start by Jackrabbit pitcher
Tayler Baker. The freshman hurler had a no-hitter through five frames before South Dakota began the sixth with a lead-off single.Â

An infield error scored a run to tie it for the Coyotes, then two hits including a two-run double, put South Dakota ahead 3-1.Â

Yotes starting pitcher Clara Edwards, who allowed three hits including an RBI double to SDSU's
Akayla Barnard in the fourth, was relieved to begin the bottom of the sixth by McKenna Young. The Jackrabbits pounced on the opportunity.
Brooke Dumont hit a solo home run to make it 3-2, then an RBI single by
Madi Conklin tied the score at 3-3.Â

The two sides remained tied as relievers in Young and SDSU's
Madi Mangulis pitched scoreless seventh and eighth innings.Â

South Dakota produced two hits in the ninth and took advantage of an error and wild pitch to plate two runs to go ahead, 5-3.Â

SDSU again responded by tying the score in the bottom of the frame.
Mia Jarecki drew a one-out walk and with two outs, she wound up being driven in on a two-run home run by
Brooke Dumont to tie the score at 5-5.Â

Neither squad took advantage of opportunities over the next three innings as starters in the circle in Baker and Edwards returned to pitch. SDSU's Baker threw a 1-2-3 13th inning to set up the Jackrabbit lineup.Â

Jarecki hit a one-out single to get the Jackrabbits on the bases.
Emma Vike followed with a single Dumont was walked to give SDSU a bases-loaded situation with one out.
Abby Gentry, who had three hits in the game prior to this plate appearance, hit a 1-1 pitch up the middle to score Jarecki and hand the Jackrabbits the extra-inning win.Â

South Dakota State improved to 29-24 overall as they moved on to Friday's winner's bracket game. South Dakota fell to 29-23 on the season and into an elimination game.Â

NOTES
- The 13-inning affair is the Jackrabbits' second-longest game during the program's Division I era. SDSU's longest game was a 14-inning meeting against Omaha held in Sioux Falls in April of 2023.Â
- Gentry had a team-high four hits as she went 4-for-7 on the day. Dumont's two home runs accounted for three RBIs. Conklin and Emma Christensen had two hits apiece for SDSU.
- Baker eventually pitched a career-high 9 1/3 innings. She allowed five hits and three runs (two earned) while walking three batters and striking out four. Baker improved to 10-5 on the season. Mangulis pitched 3 2/3 innings for the Jackrabbits and allowed two runs (none earned) on two hits.Â
