BROOKINGS, S.D. — South Dakota State continues to compete among the best at the Division I level, made apparent by the SDSU Athletic Department's recent finish in the 2024-25 Learfield Directors' Cup final standings.Â
Â
The athletic year concluded with the Jackrabbits placing 86th overall amongst 360-plus Division I institutions behind 234 points. SDSU's finish was the 14th highest outside of FBS-member schools. The Jackrabbits were the fourth-highest placing department among FCS-member programs that participate in football, excluding the Ivy League, narrowly trailing Georgetown, Northern Arizona and Cal Poly.Â
Â
SDSU's most recent finish comes a year after the Jackrabbits' best finish at the Division I level in the Learfield Directors' Cup. The Jacks took 84th overall behind a program-record 266 points accumulated in the 2023-24 academic year. South Dakota State again was the 14th highest rated department outside of FBS-member schools.Â
Â
South Dakota State has finished in the top 100 of the Learfield standings five consecutive years. The span includes an 87th-place showing in 2022-23 (211.5 points), a 94th-place finish in 2021-22 (200 points) and also was 87th in 2020-21 (199.5 points).Â
Â
"We are extremely proud of our programs across the board for their success this past year," said SDSU Director of Athletics Justin Sell. "Our teams have been able to achieve at a high level and have done so consistently during an ever-changing time in college athletics. Thank you to our student-athletes, coaches, our support staffs and all of Jackrabbit Nation for putting us in a position to be where we're at today."
Â
The Learfield Directors' Cup was canceled in 2019-20, but SDSU was 81st overall through the fall portion of that competition season.Â
Â
SDSU's only previous top-100 finish during its Division I era came in 2017-18. That year saw the Jackrabbits finish 96th overall with a then-best 197.5 points.Â
