The South Dakota State soccer program embarks on another campaign that follows a season that saw the Jackrabbits claim a Summit League tournament championship and NCAA tournament appearance. This year, however, SDSU will turn to a group that will have to come together more than they have ever done as the 2025 season progresses.Â
Â
The Jacks begin their training schedule for the upcoming season on Tuesday morning. Just two days later, the team will host its annual Blue vs. Yellow Scrimmage at 7 p.m. at Fishback Soccer Park.
Â
"The start of the season is the most exciting time of the year," SDSU head coach
Brock Thompson said. "It's a lot of planning and a lot of effort to get things rolling, but the first official practice feels like Christmas morning. As coaches, we're builders and teachers, and these first couple days you really get to do that on the ground level."
Â
SDSU's back-to-back conference titles clinched last November – which includes four Summit League tournament championships over the last six seasons – came behind the leadership of an experienced contingent. The Jackrabbits graduated five student-athletes from a season ago that ended their careers among SDSU's top 22 in all-time minutes played. A total of 10 letterwinners departed the program after helping secure the South Dakota State's eighth Summit League tournament title.Â
Â
Stepping into the program are 13 newcomers. That group is one of the largest the Jackrabbits have boasted in Thompson's time guiding the squad. It features five upperclassmen transfers along with eight highly-touted freshmen.Â
Â
"It's a challenge and it's exciting," Thompson said of working with SDSU's 2025 roster. "We're blessed to have brought in some good players in traditional freshmen and some transfers. Ultimately, the success of our program will come down to the connection that our players make with each other, as well as the consistency that we play and train at."
Â
South Dakota State won't have much time to build up for the official start of the season which begins on Aug. 14.Â
Â
Just five days after the team's intrasquad scrimmage, SDSU hosts Nebraska in its first exhibition in Brookings at Fishback Soccer Park. The Jackrabbits will square off against the Huskers on Tuesday, Aug. 5, with first kick slated for 6 p.m. The Jacks close out their exhibition slate on Aug. 8 by taking on Iowa Lakes Community College at 7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 8.Â
Â
During the two-week span between the scrimmage and the season opener, multiple things will be emphasized by the SDSU coaching staff.Â
Â
"The first couple days of practice we really devote to just training our principles of play. The next kind of phase is deciding on our primary shape and formation and then building our game model from there.
Â
"With the first practice on the 29th and the first game against an outside opponent on the fifth, that's in a lot of respects too fast, but it's also a great opportunity to compete. We get video to teach from and that is really where our growth process begins. We believe a lot in our system of how we play a game, review it, build into the next, and over the course of the season we repeat that 20 times. It's exciting to get to that point too."
Â
South Dakota State will host 10 matches against opponents this season with the Jackrabbits' home opener taking place on Aug. 22 versus Southwest Minnesota State. Season tickets are still available to purchase while single-game tickets go on sale on Tuesday.Â
