BROOKINGS, S.D. - The Jackrabbits bounced back from their loss to Wyoming with an impressive showing in front of their home fans Friday night, dominating Cal Baptist, 36-3.
The dual started at 174 pounds as Moses Espinoza-Owens took on Mason Espinoza. After a scoreless first, Espinoza-Owens was able to get to his offense with two takedowns in the second period on his way to a 10-3 decision, getting the Jacks on the board, 3-0.Â
At 184 pounds, Brock Fettig took on David Alonso. Fettig was able to score a takedown within the first minute of the dual and never looked back. Fettig piled on the offense in the third, landing takedown after takedown, securing the major decision and four points for the Jacks
Bennett Berge continued his impressive run at 197 pounds against Eli Sheeren. Berge scored twice in each of the first two periods, building his lead out to 13-4, where it stayed for another Jackrabbit major decision.Â
Micah Hach took the mat for the first time inside of First Bank & Trust Arena against Tristan Kemp. Hach used his size to his advantage, riding out Kemp in the second period, before scoring an escape to start the third. Hach secured the deciding takedown with just 10 seconds left in what was a dominant decision for the true freshman, 5-0.Â
Daniel Guanajuato finished off the first half of the dual when he took on Cooper Shore at 125 pounds. Guanajuato gave up a takedown in the first and was down 3-1 heading to the second. After Shore chose the bottom position, Guanajuato caught him with his guard down, pulling him back to the mat, and pinning his shoulders to the mat and scoring the fall for the Jacks.Â
At 133 pounds, Cale Seaton took on Mitchell Neiner, naturally a 125-pounder, who moved up a weight for the Lancers. The two traded shots in the first but Seaton found himself able to score more readily, putting up takedowns in the first, second and third periods on his way to a 19-4 tech fall over Neiner.
A marquee matchup at 141 pounds occurred as Julian Tagg took on former National Qualifier, Jesse Vazquez. Vazquez scored first in the matchup, but Tagg was able to answer back with a huge third period, highlighted by two takedowns, securing a major decision over Vazquez.Â
The only points the Jacks dropped all night were at 149 pounds, where Paul Kelly scored a decision over Colin Dupill, 8-2, to put the Lancers on the board.Â
The only ranked matchup of the night happened at 157 pounds as No. 20 Cael Swensen took on No. 29 Drayden Morton. The two traded shots back and forth, but ultimately, it was a reversal from Swensen that secured the match as he took a 3-2 decision over Morton.Â
Marcus Espinoza-Owens closed the dual at 165 pounds against Tim Cowan. The redshirt sophomore scored early and often against Cowan, racking up the takedowns in all three periods on his way to a major decision, clinching the dual for the Jacks, 36-3.
