BROOKINGS, S.D - The Jackrabbits took down the Air Force Falcons at home Friday night, 37-5.
The dual began at 125 pounds with Daniel Guanajuato getting the start against NCAA Qualifier Tucker Owens. Guanajuato scored early in the first period, getting to Owens' legs and securing the takedown to take the 3-0 lead. But Guanajuato wasn't done. From the top position, Guanajuato pulled Owens to his back for four near fall points. Guanajuato finished strong, scoring a second takedown in the third on his way to an impressive major decision over Owens.Â
At 133 pounds, Cale Seaton went head to head with Gavin Caprella. Seaton scored after a scramble in the first period, but Caprella fired back with a takedown of his own in the third. It proved to ultimately be too late as Seaton escaped Caprella's grasp and held on to a 5-4 decision, giving the Jacks a 7-0 lead.Â
The Jacks dropped their only match of the night at 141 pounds where backup Tyson Peach struggled to find his footing against Carter Nogle. Peach scored first in the match but from there it was all Nogle as he secured the 20-3 tech to get the Falcons on the board.Â
From then on it was all Jackrabbits. At 149 pounds, Colin Dupill took on Bryce Shelton. Dupill scored the first and only takedown of the match in the first period and fended off Shelton for the remainder of the bout, scoring a 4-2 decision and increasing the Jacks lead back to 7.Â
Cael Swensen went up against EJ Beloncik at 157 pounds and made short work of the Falcon. After scoring four takedowns, Swensen locked up a cradle and put Beloncik on his back, to score his first pin of the season and add six more points to the Jacks lead.Â
In the only ranked versus ranked match of the night, No. 28 Marcus Espinoza-Owens faced off with No. 33 Logan Fowler. After a tough first period, where neither wrestler had an edge, Espinoza-Owens got to Fowler's legs on a shot and scored the deciding takedown in the match. Espinoza-Owens fended off a late scramble attempt by Fowler to secure the decision and add to the Jacks lead, up 19-5.
At 174 pounds, No. 14 Moses Espinoza-Owens went to work on Gunner Cramblett. After a slow start Espinoza-Owens put together a series of takedowns, with the deciding one coming with just four second left in the bout as he scored his 23rd win of the year in style with a 20-5 tech fall.Â
Brock Fettig stepped up to a tall task taking on Brian Burburija, who scored the only points for the Falcons the last time these teams met. Fettig got right to work scoring on a double leg attempt in the first and riding Burburija out to finish the period. Burburija answered back in the third period with a takedown of his own, but it was too late as Fettig had secured the ride time point and the 6-3 decision for the Jackrabbits.Â
The Jackrabbits ended the night with consecutive tech falls from their 197 and 285 pounders, No. 5 Bennett Berge and No. 24 Luke Rasmussen. Bennett Berge made short work of Owen Heiser in their bout, scoring a takedown in the first before catching Heiser in a cradle in the second for four near-fall points. Berge continued his dominance throughout the match, eventually locking up the 17-2 tech fall and five points for the Jacks.
Luke Rasmussen closed the show with a win over Antonio Ramos in the heavyweight showdown. Rasmussen scored early on an ankle pick and went straight to work, where he's best, the top position. A pair of four-point near falls and another takedown essentially locked up the match for Rasmussen as he scored a reversal in the third to secure the shutout, the tech fall and the match for the Jacks, 37-5.
