IOWA CITY, Iowa — Cody Vertin finished fifth in the finals of the 200-yard individual medley and four other Jackrabbits solidified spots in the SDSU all-time top 10 in the event during competition Thursday at the Summit League Swimming and Diving Championships.
A junior from Brookings, Vertin posted the sixth-fastest time in the 200 IM preliminaries during the morning session at 1 minute, 49.80 seconds, then came back during the night session to improve by one spot with a time of 1:48.96. Nicholas Morton of Denver won the event in 1:47.44.
Jackrabbit teammate Hayden Tellier also qualified for the A final in the 200 IM and placed eighth in 1:51.12, while freshman Conner Trinidad claimed the B final to place ninth (1:51.26) and Braxton McGrath finished 14th (1:52.57). Tellier's time is now the fourth-fastest time in program history, while Trinidad stands fifth after clocking a time of 1:51.25 in the prelims.
McGrath took over seventh place on the SDSU career list with his time of 1:51.87 in the prelims and freshman teammate Evan Schott moved into eighth after posting a time of 1:51.98 in a swim-off later in the morning session.
Two other Jackrabbits competed in the B final of the 500 freestyle Thursday night. Kolden Kringen placed 14th in 4:35.08, while Jack Ellison came in 16th in a time of 4:37.16. Kringen set a personal best of 4:32.88 in the prelims to improve his sixth-place standing in program history.
Preliminary competition at the Summit League Swimming and Diving Championships resumes at 10 a.m. Friday at the University of Iowa's Campus Recreation and Wellness Center. The finals session is set for a 5:30 p.m. start.
