VERMILLION, S.D. – Senior
Madi Mangulis threw the first complete-game shutout of her college career as her effort, along with timely hitting, lifted South Dakota State to a 4-0 victory over South Dakota on Friday at Nygaard Field. SDSU defeated USD in both teams' opening game of The Summit League softball schedule.Â

Each teams' starting pitchers got off to strong starts. Mangulis put down the Coyotes in order over the course of the first four innings. She gave up one hit in that span, but benefitted from a double play turned by
Emma Vike in the second frame.Â

South Dakota starter Madison Evans gave up just one hit to
Ella Berlage in the second before heading to the fourth. SDSU's
Bria Riebel led the fourth inning off with a solo home run to put the Jackrabbits on top 1-0.Â

Mangulis faced a threat in the fifth. The Coyotes got runners on the corners with two outs. SDSU got out of the jam as Mangulis forced a fly out to keep the score at 1-0. Another double play turned by Vike in the sixth eventually pushed the game to the seventh.Â

The Jackrabbits broke the game open in the final inning of action.
Abby Gentry hit a one-out double and was plated on an RBI single by
Alivya Bollen to extend the lead to 2-0. An RBI triple off the bat of
Quinn Marnocha made it 3-0, then Vike hit an RBI single to push the score to 4-0.Â

Mangulis closed out the complete game with a 1-2-3 seventh inning. She gave up just four hits to the Coyote lineup. Mangulis didn't walk a batter as she improved to 5-4 on the season behind her third complete game of the year.Â

Vike had a team-high two of SDSU's eight hits. Four different Jacks had RBIs and another four scored runs.Â

- South Dakota State improved to 16-19 overall on the season.Â
- SDSU has now won six straight games in Vermillion against South Dakota. The Jackrabbits' last loss at Nygaard Field came in 2022.
- The Jackrabbits have won their Summit League opener in four consecutive seasons.
