BROOKINGS, S.D. - South Dakota State Athletic Director Justin Sell announced the hiring of Austin Hieb as Deputy Athletic Director on Thursday. Hieb, an Aberdeen native, is returning to his home state after four years as Athletic Director at the University of Jamestown.

Hieb will work closely with SDSU's external relations team to enhance the Jackrabbits' profile while facilitating day-to-day department operations and managing sport supervision duties.
"I am thrilled to welcome Austin to South Dakota State," Sell said. "His familiarity with Jackrabbit Athletics and his track record of success will make him a tremendous asset as we continue to elevate our department. I look forward to the impact his leadership will make on our student-athletes and university as a whole."
In four years at Jamestown, Hieb guided the university's transition from NAIA to NCAA Division II while leading a department that claimed nine conference titles and won the NAIA volleyball national championship in 2022. He served in an expanded leadership role for the university as a member of the Jamestown President's Cabinet. With the support of the Jamestown development team, Hieb strengthened relationships with alumni and supporters and stewarded significant athletic facility upgrades.
Prior to his time with the Jimmies, Hieb served as the Associate Athletic Director of External Operations at Northern State in Aberdeen. At NSU, Hieb oversaw a number of areas, including the Wolves Club, event ticketing and championship funds.
"South Dakota State University has built one of the premier athletic departments in the country, and I'm incredibly honored to join the Jackrabbit family," said Hieb. "I'm grateful to President Dunn and Justin Sell for their trust in me. Everyone was so welcoming throughout the process that the fit felt natural."
"The University of Jamestown will always be a special chapter in my family's life and we built relationships that we'll value forever, but we're really excited about our next adventure and to join the South Dakota State family."
Hieb earned a juris doctorate from the University of South Dakota School of Law. He is a graduate of Dakota Wesleyan University with degrees in English and communications, and was a four-year member of the Tigers' golf team.
Hieb and his wife, Nicole, have one son, Opie.
