BEFORE SDSU: The 2018 Argus Leader’s Track Athlete of the Year competed in both cross country and track as a member of the Bison High School and was home schooled ... a six-time South Dakota Class B all-state honoree (2012-17) in cross country - earning All-American status in 2017 and an honorable All-American status in 2016 - and four-time all-state winner in track and field (2015-18) - earning All-American status in 2017 ... he was a three-time cross country state champion in Class B (2015-17) and won seven state championship titles across three track events (800m: one - 2018; 1,600m: four - 2015-18; 3,200m: two - 2016-17) ... in 2017’s track season, earned the Gold Medal award for his performance in the 3,200m and was the state’s Outstanding Track Athlete award-winner en route to a Bison High School team finish of third overall ... his high school team won the Class B state championship in cross country four times (2013-16) and won the track team championship once (2016) ... thee team was named Region 5B champions in cross country for the 2016 season while claiming four conference championships (2013-16) and were three-time Region 8B and conference champions (2015-17) ... individually at conference and regionals in cross country, Burkhalter was a six-time champion (2012-17) ... had an undefeated junior cross country season (2016) ... his state track performances: 2013 - 1,600m (eighth), 3,200m (third); 2014 - 1,600m (second), 3,200m (second); 2015 - 1,600m (won), 3,200m (fourth); 2016 - 1,600m (won), 3,200m (won), Medley Relay (second); 2017 - 800m (third), 1,600m (won), 3,200m (won); 2018 - 800m (won), 1,600m (won), 3,200m (fourth) ... holds school records in: 800m (1:56.02, 2017), 1,600m (4:18.17, 2017), 3,200m (9:27.00, 2017), 4x200m (1:35.95, 2016) ... graduated with a 4.0 GPA and with honors in 2018.
