Josh Davis returned to the Jackrabbit football coaching staff in February 2022 as passing game coordinator and wide receivers coach.
Davis previously served as wide receivers coach at South Dakota State from 2009-15, when he mentored five players currently in the Jackrabbits’ top 10 for career receptions. His star pupils included first-team all-Missouri Valley Football Conference performers Dale Moss (2011), Jason Schneider (2013) and Jake Wieneke (2014, 2015). Wieneke also earned All-America accolades and was a finalist for the Jerry Rice Award as the top freshman in the Football Championship Subdivision during the 2014 season, and would go on to rewrite the Jackrabbit receiving record book.
An Omaha native, Davis spent the past six years at Northwestern College (Iowa), where he was offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for a perennial top-10 NAIA program that reached the national championship game in the spring of 2021. After going 3-7 in his first season in Orange City, the Red Raiders combined for a 51-10 overall record over the next five seasons, winning at least nine games and qualifying for postseason play each year.
Davis directed an offense that racked up an NAIA-leading 4,212 yards through the air during a 2020-21 season that consisted of Great Plains Athletic Conference play in the fall and postseason play in the spring. The Red Raiders also ranked fifth in NAIA with an average of 484.4 yards per game.
A standout receiver himself for the Jackrabbits from 2002-05, Davis ended his career as the Jackrabbits’ all-time leader in receptions (225) and ranked second in both career receiving yards (3,192) and touchdowns (26). While those marks have been surpassed, Davis continues to hold the SDSU single-game receptions record with 16.
