Veteran offensive line coach Mike Bangtson was hired to fill the same role at South Dakota State in January 2025.
Â
"This is a big-time get for the Jacks with Mike Bangtson," Jackrabbit head coach Dan Jackson said. "He's got a ton of experience in systems like ours and with his ties to the region, being from Iowa originally, will make a difference in recruiting in the area. The relationships he will build in the O-line room will help take us to the next level."
Â
Bangtson spent the 2024 season at Sam Houston State, where he directed an offensive line that paved the way for the Bearkats to rush for 179.8 yards per game en route to a 10-3 overall record and a victory in the New Orleans Bowl. He coached a pair of all-Conference USA offensive linemen, with a third lineman honored on the league's All-Freshman Team.
Â
From 2021-23, Bangtson coached at Stephen F. Austin, working his way from offensive analyst to co-offensive line coach to assistant coach in charge of the offensive line. The Lumberjacks claimed the Western Athletic Conference title in 2022.
Â
A native of Cedar Falls, Iowa, Bangtson played collegiately at Iowa State and began his coaching career as a student assistant with the Cyclones in 2012 after injuries derailed his playing efforts. He was part of an NCAA Division II national championship at Northwest Missouri State in 2013 and then moved on to coach the offensive line at Upper Iowa in 2014.
Â
Other coaching stops for Bangtson include serving graduate assistantships at Memphis (2015) and Virginia Tech (2016-17), as well as three seasons as offensive line coach at South Alabama (2018-20).
