BEFORE SDSU: Earned first-team all-state honors in football at Brookings High School and was a two-time finalist in the heavyweight division at the Class A state wrestling meet ... member of the Sioux Falls Argus Leader Elite 45 ... did not allow any sacks from his offensive tackle position during his junior and senior seasons and blocked for a pair of 1,500-yard rushers ... also played on the defensive side of the ball, tallying 62 tackles, including five tackles for loss and three sacks ... won state wrestling title as a junior before finishing as runner-up as a senior ... in track and field, was a two-time state qualifier in both the discus and shot put ... three-time academic all-region honoree ... younger brother, Gus, also is a member of the Jackrabbit football team
