Tyler Lippert is in his eighth season as the throws coach at South Dakota State University.
During his time in Brookings, Lippert has made a major impact on the Jackrabbit Track and Field program. During the past 8 seasons at SDSU his athletes have broken 9 school records in the throwing events along with the men’s decathlon and women’s heptathlon records, as well as achieving 60 top ten list marks in the throwing events. Most notably, Lippert has developed and sent 15 competitors to the NCAA West Regional during his time at SDSU.
The 2024 season was highlighted by two school records in the throwing events. Nora Peterson broke the school record in the women’s javelin throw with a 156’4” performance at the Drake Relays in a winning effort. Peterson also was Summit League Runner-Up and an NCAA West Regional Qualifier in the javelin. Ethan Fischer broke the school record in the men’s discus with a throw of 186’6”. Fischer was also Summit League Runner-Up and an NCAA West Regional Qualifier in the discus. At The Summit League Indoor and Outdoor Championship meets, Hunter Wallster was Runner-Up in the men’s weight throw and Conference Champion the in the Hammer Throw. Wallster was also named men’s scholar of the championship at the Summit League Indoor Championship meet. Mildred Young was Summit League Runner-Up in the women’s discus throw. Freshman Caiden Fredrick was All-conference in the indoor shot put, outdoor shot put, discus, and weight throw during his first-year campaign for the Jackrabbits. Fredrick also finished in sixth place at the USATF U-20 championship meet in the discus throw. Overall, the Jackrabbit throwers had 4 combined new entries to the top ten list.
The 2023 season was highlighted by many high-level performances by the Jackrabbit throwers. Dominick Etherington broke the school record to be crowned Summit League Indoor Champion in the shot put with a throw of 60’8.5”. Etherington is the second thrower in school history to break the 60’ barrier in the shot put, and was also All-Conference in the weight throw. Etherington was named the Summit League Field Event Athlete of the Meet at the 2023 Indoor Summit League Championship Meet. Etherington was also an NCAA West Regional Qualifier in the shot put during the outdoor season. Hunter Wallster won the Summit League title in the men’s weight throw with a throw of 65’9.5”. Wallster followed up his success from the indoor season with a runner-up finish and a school record performance at the Summit League Outdoor Championship Meet of 207’1” in the hammer throw. Wallster also qualified for the NCAA West Regional in the hammer throw. Faith Leiseth was a conference runner-up in the indoor and outdoor shot put, accomplishing a school record in the outdoor shot put of 50’2.5”. Leiseth also was all-conference in the discus at the Summit League Outdoor Championship Meet. Freshman Ethan Fischer was conference runner-up in the discus at the Summit League Championship Meet and finished in fifth place in the discus at the USATF U-20 championship meet. Overall, the Jackrabbit throwers had a combined 6 new entries into the SDSU top 10 list.
The Jackrabbits were Men’s Indoor Summit League Champions in February 2022. On the women’s side, Faith Leiseth broke the school record in the discus and qualified for the NCAA West Regional Preliminary Round. Leiseth also finished runner-up in the shot put at the Summit League Indoor Championship Meet with a throw of 174’1”. Leiseth is also the second jackrabbit women’s shot putter to break the 50’ barrier. Mildred Young set a new Costa Rican National Record in the women’s discus with a throw of 167’6”. There were 11 new entries on the SDSU top ten list for the throws group during the 2022 season.
In 2021, Lippert guided Trevor Begeman to school record performances in the indoor and outdoor shot put. Begeman became the first 60 foot shot putter in the history of the program. Begeman lead a group of outstanding shot putters with a 61’9” performance. Tyson Jenkins, along with Begeman, qualified for the NCAA West Regional Preliminary Round in the shot put. Jenkins performance of 59’4.25” is the second best performance in the shot put ever recorded at SDSU. Samuel Coil threw 201’3” in the hammer throw and qualified for the NCAA West Regional Preliminary Round.
During the 2020 indoor season, Lippert lead the men’s indoor shot put group to a #5 ranking in the USTFCCCA NCAA Division 1 rankings. Dominick Etherington broke the school record in the indoor shot put with the furthest throw in the history of the program at the time of 59’. The outdoor season was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Jackrabbits were Men’s Indoor Summit League Champions in February 2019.
Evan Heiber finished as Summit League runner-up in the heptathlon. Logan Ammons finished runner-up at the Summit League Outdoor Championship Meet in the hammer throw and qualified for NCAA West Regional Preliminary Round.
In 2018, Lippert helped Colton Bender reach a new Summit League Indoor Championship meet record in the weight throw. At the time, Nathaniel Marshall who Lippert coached at Western Illinois University previously held the record. Bender also qualified for the NCAA West Regional Preliminary Round in the hammer throw. Mason Leiseth was the Summit League runner-up in the indoor shot put and qualified for NCAA West Regional Preliminary Round in the shot put. Noah Huber was All-Summit League in the indoor shot put with a third place finish at the conference championship meet. Evan Heiber set a new school record in the decathlon and finished runner-up at the Summit League Outdoor Championship Meet, throwing personal records in every throwing event at the meet. Kasie Vollmer was a Summit League champion in the women's discus throw, and qualified for NCAA West Regional Preliminary Round in the discus throw. Vanessa Lane won Summit League title in the heptathlon.
Lippert joined the Jackrabbits in the fall of 2016. During the 2017 season, he helped Silvia Zanini and Kasie Vollmer reach the NCAA West Regional Preliminary Round. Zanini set a new Italian national record in the weight throw for the time. Vollmer set a school record in the women's discus, conference runner-up in the Summit League Championships, and finished 14th at the NCAA West Regional Preliminary Meet. Lippert also helped guide Vanessa Lane to an outdoor school record in the heptathlon. Lippert helped Colton Bender set a new school record in the hammer throw and qualify for the NCAA West Preliminary Round. Dakota Leonhard broke the school record in the javelin.
Prior to joining SDSU, Lippert coached throws and strength and conditioning at Youngstown State University from August 2015 until October 2016. He helped Conner Neu earn first team All-American honors in the weight throw and second team All-American honors in the hammer throw. Neu also finished 11th at the 2016 United States Olympic Trials in the hammer throw. Lippert also helped Ryan Booth and Jaynee Corbett qualify for the NCAA East Regional Preliminary Round in the shot put. Another one of Lippert’s athletes, Isaac Agyemang, finished runner-up in the decathlon at the USATF U-20 Outdoor Championship Meet. In his lone season with the Penguins, the team won the men’s Indoor and Outdoor conference championship, the women’s outdoor championship, and had eight Horizon League titles in throwing events.
Prior to his time at Youngstown State, Lippert was a volunteer assistant coach with the Arkansas Razorbacks Men’s Track and Field program for the 2014-2015 season. Lippert was the throws coach and assisted with strength and conditioning during his time in Fayetteville. Lippert was on the staff of the Razorbacks men’s team that finished third-place at the 2015 NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Championships. He helped Devin Randall qualify for the NCAA West Regional Preliminary Round in the shot put and discus. Randall also broke the school record in the hammer throw. Additionally, he helped Nathanael Franks earn a second team all-American finish in the decathlon at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. In the same season, he coached Sam Kempka and Jeff Rogers to qualifying marks in the USATF Junior National Championships in the shot put.
Lippert began coaching during the 2013-2014 season. He served as the throws coach at Western Illinois University. In his one campaign with the Leathernecks, Nathaniel Marshall qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in the hammer throw earning an NCAA All-American Honorable Mention distinction. In that same season, Marshall broke the Summit League conference record in the weight throw.
As an athlete at Western Illinois University from the fall of 2008 until the spring of 2013 Lippert was a contributor at the Summit League Track and Field Championships in the shot put, hammer throw, and weight throw.
Lippert earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Exercise Science in 2013 from Western Illinois. He earned his master of education in Sport Psychology from the University of Missouri in 2015. Lippert is also a National Strength and Conditioning Association Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist.
