Austin Hieb was announced as South Dakota State's Deputy Athletic Director in May of 2026. The Aberdeen, South Dakota native returned to his home state after four years as Athletic Director at the University of Jamestown.
As SDSU, Hieb will work closely with SDSU's external relations team to enhance the Jackrabbits' profile while facilitating day-to-day department operations and managing sport supervision duties.
In four years at Jamestown, Hieb guided the university's transition from NAIA to NCAA Division II while leading a department that claimed nine conference titles and won the NAIA volleyball national championship in 2022. He served in an expanded leadership role for the university as a member of the Jamestown President's Cabinet. With the support of the Jamestown development team, Hieb strengthened relationships with alumni and supporters and stewarded significant athletic facility upgrades.
Prior to his time with the Jimmies, Hieb served as the Associate Athletic Director of External Operations at Northern State in Aberdeen. At NSU, Hieb oversaw a number of areas, including the Wolves Club, event ticketing and championship funds.
Hieb earned a juris doctorate from the University of South Dakota School of Law. He is a graduate of Dakota Wesleyan University with degrees in English and communications, and was a four-year member of the Tigers' golf team.
Hieb and his wife, Nicole, have one son, Opie.
