Tyler Merriam serves as the associate athletic director for media, continuing an association with South Dakota State athletics that dates back to the fall of 2003.
In his role, Merriam serves as the lead television and radio voice for SDSU athletics on Midco Sports, the Summit League Network and the Jackrabbit Sports Network. He handles football, men's and women's basketball, wrestling, baseball and softball play-by-play while also coordinating the on-site production for those events.
Additionally, he hosts and produces weekly coaches shows for the football and basketball programs that air both on television and radio, and voices a three-minute daily update on the latest in SDSU athletics. Those productions are heard throughout the seven-state coverage are of the Jackrabbit Sports Network.
He works closely with Midco Sports on the department's television broadcasts, coordinates the production for all Summit League Network broadcasts and oversees all of the radio broadcasts for the Jackrabbit Sports Network.
Merriam also performs host and producer duties for major events such as the Jackrabbit Athletic Scholarship Auction, the Jackrabbit Sports Hall of Fame induction ceremonies and the Jackrabbit Athletics Scholarship Endowment Dinner.
Behind the scenes, Merriam provides guidance for Jackrabbit athletics' communications efforts, helping with news releases, media relations efforts and the department's YouTube channel.
Merriam joined the department as a freshman in 2003, working under Ron Lenz and Jason Hove in the sports information office. During his sophomore year he became the radio voice of Jackrabbit baseball, a position he has held ever since. He also called softball while filling in on football and men’s basketball games while an undergraduate.
In 2008 he became the lead play-by-play man for SDSU volleyball and women’s basketball, while also serving as co-sports director of Brookings Radio. The following year he joined the WNAX broadcast crew, where he spent two seasons working alongside Steve Imming on football and men’s basketball games in addition to his women’s basketball and baseball duties.
Merriam has won the South Dakota Sportscaster of the Year, chosen by his peers in the National Sports Media Association; the Bill Schwanke Award, which goes to the top FCS radio broadcaster in the country; and numerous Eric Sevareid Awards for this radio play-by-play broadcasts.
Additionally, Merriam has been a member of the University's Recruiting & Marketing Committee. the Integrated Marketing & Communications Task & Force, and the Campus Communicators Committee, working closely with the University in the marketing and promotions of both Jackrabbit athletics and the University.
His role in sports in the state isn't limited to SDSU. Merriam has served as the public address announcer at the South Dakota State Class A Senior American Legion Baseball Tournament since 2015. He is also a member of the South Dakota Sports Hall of Fame committee and handles emcee duties for the annual induction ceremonies.
Born and raised in Pierre, S.D., Merriam graduated from SDSU with a Bachelor of Science degree in journalism. He lives in Brookings with his wife, Jill, and sons, Joseph and Wyatt.
