MISSOULA, Mont. ? South Dakota State outshot Northern Colorado 12-8 Friday afternoon at the Montana Nike Cup in Missoula, Mont., but Bears forward Marika Johnson netted a goal and assisted on another to lead UNC to a 3-0 victory over SDSU at South Campus Stadium.
Northern Colorado took a 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute of the match as Johnson scored off an assist from Chrissy Johnson. SDSU's
Erin Kasmarik, a sophomore from Coon Rapids, Minn., looked to tie the game in the 32nd minute, but saw her shot saved by Chrissy Marvin.
UNC's Teresa Prais gave the Bears a 2-0 advantage in the second half, heading the ball over goalkeeper Nicole Lograsso off a free kick from goalkeeper Marvin.
After Marcie Johnson gave UNC a 3-0 advantage in the match, SDSU squandered several scoring opportunities as both Chelsea Goosen and Heather Hill saw their shots fail to reach the back of the net in the 78th minute. Marvin kept SDSU off the board three minutes later, stopping senior Karoline Brause's penalty kick.
South Dakota State finished the match with a 12-8 advantage in shots attempted, including a 6-2 advantage in the first half. The Jacks also held an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks for the match.
Lograsso made two stops on the day, while Marvin recorded four saves and assisted on two of the Bears three goals.
The Jackrabbits moved to 3-6-1 on the year, while Northern Colorado improved to 4-6-0.
South Dakota State will look to get back on track Sunday when it takes on host school Montana in Missoula. Start time for the match against the Grizzlies is set for 1:30 p.m. (MT).
