Jackrabbits come up just short in OT at Bakersfield

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. ? Sophomore Garrett Callahan's game winning three-pointer at the buzzer in overtime spun around the rim, but did not fall, sending the South Dakota State to a 73-71 loss on Friday night against Cal State-Bakersfield.
The shot that did not go sent the 1,489 fans at Rabobank Arena home happy as the Roadrunners improve to 3-10 with the win, while the Jackrabbits fall to 5-7 with the loss.
Led by senior Ben Beran with a game-high 25 points on 11-of-16 shooting (69 percent), the Jackrabbits as a team shot 51.9 percent (28-of-54) from the floor compared to the 27.9 percent (25-of-66) by the ?Runners The reason of the final score, turnovers. The Jacks committed 17 of them (13 in the second half and overtime) to the ?Runners seven.
Along with Beran, Callahan finished the night with 16 points to round out the Jackrabbits double-digit scorers.
Trent Blakley led the balanced attack for CSUB with 23 points, Zack Grasmick pitch in with 14, while Terrance Johns scored 13 and Alex Johnson ten.
The Jackrabbits out-rebounded the Roadrunners 39-36 and dished out seven more assists, 19-12.
The back-and-forth battle for the win started from the opening tip, as the Jacks and ?Runners played to seven ties with nine lead changes in the first half, with neither team able to build a lead of more than four points.
CSUB went on quick 7-0 run early in the second half to take an eight-point lead at 46-38, but the Jacks countered with an 8-0 run, and tied things up at 46 on a Beran free throw.
The ?Runners would take the lead back until a Beran jumper in the paint put the Jacks up two at 55-53 with 6:36 to play in regulation.
The Jacks would increase their lead to as many as six points and held a five-point lead at 59-64 with 1:53 on the clock.
The ?Runners came back to score the last five points of the second half though, and both teams went scoreless over the last 1:05, sending the game to overtime.
Callahan drained his second, and final, three-pointer of the game to open the extra period, but CSUB chipped away at the lead before eventually taking it for good at 70-69 on a Cory Brown jumper with 2:37 to go in overtime.
Down 73-69 with just 24 seconds to play, freshman Clint Sargent cut the lead to two with a jumper and the Jacks quickly fouled Johnson, who promptly missed both foul shots giving the Jacks a chance for a win or another overtime, but Callahan's shot spun out and the game ended with the Jacks fifth loss.
The Jackrabbits get two days to shake off the loss before resuming their west coast swing on Sunday, when they travel north to San Jose, Calif., to take on the Spartans of San Jose State.
