IOWA CITY, Iowa ? Rain in Iowa City delayed play Saturday at the Iowa Classic, but South Dakota State and Northern Illinois finally did meet on Saturday for the second time this season, although two hours late.
The Huskies, who beat SDSU 3-4 on the first day of the season, came away with their second one run win over the Jackrabbits this season, this time 3-2.
The Jacks did strike first though in the first inning. Brooke Postma reached on an error with one-out, and promptly stole her 15th base of the season in as may tries, and 29th of her career in as many tries, to get into scoring position.
Two batters later, Samantha Heinzman singled Postma home to stake the Jacks to a 1-0 lead.
It stayed 1-0 SDSU until NIU cracked the scoreboard in the fourth on a Michelle Nendza RBI double that tied the game at one.
The Huskies took the lead when the next batter, Ellen Stoddard, smacked a two-run homerun over the left field fence to put NIU up 3-1.
SDSU plated one more run in the fifth on a Steph Kuhl RBI single, her SDSU record breaking 122nd RBI of her carrer, but the rally fell short, and the Jacks could not mount another threat.
The Jacks, who fall to 10-16 on the season, return to action Sunday at the Iowa Classic with games against North Dakota State at 10 a.m. and Ball State at 2 p.m.
