AMES, Iowa ? South Dakota State and Iowa State squeezed in the first game of a double-header in Ames on Tuesday, but the rains came in the third inning of game two, so the Jackrabbits could not avenge a 2-1 Game 1 loss.
Senior standout Steph Kuhl got things going for the Jacks in the top of the second with a leadoff single up the middle.
Maggie Eilers came on to pinch run for Kuhl and advanced to second on a Teresa Howell single through the right side.
Amanda Fedson laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Eilers to third and Howell to second before Dani Broshar singled Eilers home with a single to center field to put SDSU in front 1-0.
The Cyclones got two of their three hits in the bottom of the third and capitalized on a Jacks error to get their only runs of the game, but as it turns out, the only two runs they would need.
Jenna Marston pitched a three hit gem, but took the loss for the Jacks. Marston pitched all six innings and gave up two runs, one earned, while striking out four and walking none.
Sophomore Brooke Postma did steal her 18th base of the season and 32nd of her career, both in as many attempts.
Kuhl and Howell teamed up for four of the Jacks seven hits; both went 2-for-3 on the day.
The Jacks (10-21) return to action again on Wednesday, this time against the Iowa Hawkeyes. First pitch from Iowa City is scheduled for 3 p.m. As always though, weather permitting.
