MITCHELL -- Kirby Morsching pitched 7 1/3 innings to pick up his first win of the season and South Dakota State took advantage of three Dakota Wesleyan errors in a 9-2 Jackrabbit victory Tuesday afternoon at Cadwell Park.
In winning for the eighth time in 10 games, SDSU improved to 17-13 on the season. DWU dropped to 21-13.
SDSU got on the board with an unearned run in the top of the first inning. With one out, Korby Mintken singled and stole second for his 13th stolen base in as many tries this season. Mintken later advanced to third on a flyout and scored on an errant pickoff throw.
The Jackrabbits added three runs in the top of the third. Jake Rogers scored the first run of the frame on an error, with Cal Lewis adding an RBI double and Tony Martin contributing a run-scoring single later in the inning. Lewis doubled twice in the game as SDSU out-hit the Tigers, 12-9.
Mintken, Martin and Matt Zabel also had two hits for the Jackrabbits.
DWU scored its only two runs of the game in the bottom of the third on run-scoring hits by Josh Oltmans and Jake Roy.
SDSU put the game out of reach with a three-run sixth inning. Mintken tripled in the first two runs and later scored on the third DWU error of the game.
Morsching, a sophomore from Rapid City, struck out five and did not walk a batter as he improved to 1-2 on the season.
Tiger starter Phil Johnson lasted just 2 2/3 innings in taking the loss.
SDSU returns to action Wednesday at Minnesota. First pitch is set for 3:05 p.m. at Siebert Field in Minneapolis. The Jackrabbits will then head to Rapid City for a three-game series Friday, Saturday and Sunday against Northern Colorado.
