BROOKINGS, S.D. ? South Dakota State hosted Valparaiso in the second ever doubleheader at the new Jackrabbit Softball Stadium on Saturday, but failed to earn its first win at the new park, as the Jackrabbits fell to the Crusaders 5-1 and 5-2 in front of 120 fans.
Valpo scored all of its Game 1 runs in a first inning flurry. Taylor Callahan opened the game with a single to left, and then advanced to second and a Karen Korb sacrifice bunt.
Shannon Robinson followed that up with a single to center field to move Callahan to third. Both runners advanced on a past ball and the Crusaders took a 1-0 lead.
A single and a walk later, Tracy Korth came up with the bases loaded, and then promptly unloaded them with a grand slam home run just over the left field fence.
Crusader starter Andrea Zappia then took over, and carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning, getting 11 strikeouts along the way.
Brooke Postma started the Jackrabbit half of the sixth with a walk and caught the Crusaders sleeping as she stole second before Zappia threw the next pitch.
Two batters later, Samantha Heinzman broke up Zappia's no-hit bid and shutout with an RBI double to the gap in left center field, scoring Postma from second for the Jacks only run of the game.
Carrie Franson came on for Zappia in the seventh, but after walking the first two Jackrabbit batters, Zappia came back and closed out the Crusader win.
After the tough first inning, Jenna Marston settled down to finish the game for the Jacks. Marston gave up seven hits, five earned runs, struck out six and walked three in the loss.
Valparaiso jumped out to another quick lead in Game 2, touching up Jackrabbit starter Kim Westendorf for three runs in the top of the first inning.
It stayed 3-0 Valpo until the Jacks got something going in the bottom of the sixth.
Denise Leon opened the inning with her third single of the day and advanced to third when Heinzman reached on a throwing error.
Zappia came in to relieve Game 2 starter Chris Halstead and walked the first batter, Steph Kuhl, to load the bases for Kiley Schwedhelm, who laced a double down the left field line, scoring Leon and Heinzman to get the Jacks within one at 3-2.
Zappia struck out the next two Jacks batters to end the threat, and then got a little insurance in the top of the seventh, when Shannon Robinson sealed the sweep with a two-run home run over the wall in left center field.
Halstead pitched five innings, giving up four hits, two runs to earn the win. Zappia pitched the final two innings to earn the save.
Kim Westendorf pitched two and two-thirds innings and took the loss for SDSU, who falls to 11-26 on the season after the sweep.
Leon led the Jacks on offense, going 3-for-4 at the plate.
SDSU returns to action on Tuesday, when the Jacks travel to Minneapolis to take the Golden Gophers of Minnesota.
First pitch of the doubleheader from Jane Sage Cowles Stadium is set for 4 p.m.
