MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. ? South Dakota State pounded out 12 hits in its first game of the day against Minnesota en route to a 4-0 win, but got no-hit in game two as the Golden Gophers earned a split in a doubleheader on Tuesday at Cowles Stadium in Minneapolis with a 2-0 win.
Brooke Postma got things going for the Jackrabbits in Game 1 with a two-out infield single. Postma then got into scoring position with her team-best 23rd stolen base of the season, and scored when her sister, Brittany, singled her home in the next at bat.
Brittany advanced to second on the throw, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and then scored on a Steph Kuhl single to center field to put the Jacks on top 2-0.
Brittany Postma started another Jackrabbit rally in the third inning, when she single and stole second. Postma's 17th stolen base of the season paid off, when Dani Broshar doubled her home in the next at-bat to give SDSU a 3-0 lead.
The Jacks fourth and final run of Game 1 came much like the first. Brooke Postma singled and stole second, and then Brittany Postma singled her home.
In between the Jackrabbit runs, Jenna Marston scattered four hits, struck out five and walked four to earn her second shutout win of the season, improving her record to 8-13, and the Jacks record to 12-26.
Brittany Postma led the Jacks offense, going 3-for-4 at the plate, with two RBI, two runs scored and a stolen base.
Brooke Postma went 2-for-4 at the plate with two stolen bases and two runs scored.
Kuhl and Broshar both finished 2-for-4 at the plate with an RBI.
The second game of the double-dip played out much differently than did the first, much to the dismay of the Jackrabbits.
Gopher starter Briana Hassett sat down the first four Jackrabbit batters in order, all via the strikout.
Hassett then got all the run support she needed in the second, when Chrissy Sward smacked a two RBI double to right-center field to give Minnesota a 2-0 lead.
Hassett took a perfect game into the sixth inning, and even though she issued back-to-back two-out walks in the sixth, she stayed the course and struck out a career high 14 SDSU batters, on the way to her first no-hitter, the 15th in Minnesota history.
Marston pitched her second complete game of the day in the night cap, but took the loss. Marston gave up just five hits, and two runs, while striking out seven and walking one.
The Jacks, who fall to 12-27 with the loss, return to action on Wednesday, when they host former North Central Conference foe Augustana at the Jackrabbit Softball Stadium.
First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
