RAPID CITY ?
Tony Martin's grand slam in the bottom of the seventh inning gave South Dakota State the lead for good, lifting the Jackrabbits to a 14-9 see-saw victory over Northern Colorado in the second game of a three-game baseball series Saturday afternoon at Fitzgerald Stadium.
The Jackrabbits also received home runs from
Tyson Fisher and
Craig Parry in improving to 19-14 overall. UNC, which hit four home runs in the game, dropped to 10-22.
The Bears took a 1-0 lead as Anthony Garcia led off the game with an opposite-field home run to right.
SDSU countered with a pair of runs in the home half of the first.
Jake Rogers led off with a base hit and scored on Fisher's first home run of the season, a two-run shot to left.
The Jackrabbits added another pair in the third inning on a
Cal Lewis two-run single down the left field line with two outs, scoring
Korby Mintken and
Nick Adams.
UNC battled back to take the lead with a four-run fifth inning, batting around against SDSU starter
Caleb Thielbar. John Ray doubled in the first line and Grady Gorman followed with a three-run blast to left.
SDSU regained the lead in the sixth inning on a controversial two-run homer by
Craig Parry. Parry's shot to left center with Adams aboard was originally ruled to have hit just above the yellow line at the base of the scoreboard, and was later upheld after a conference by the umpires.
A wild seventh inning ensued as Northern Colorado hit a pair of home runs off Jackrabbit reliever
Kevin Morsching to take an 8-6 advantage. Ray homered for the second time in as many games, hitting a solo shot to left to knot the game at 6-all. After a walk to Adam Symons, Chad Murray followed with a two-run homer just to the left of center field.
As they have all season, the Jackrabbits countered with a big inning of their own. Mintken doubled in
Tim Hanigan with the first run. After
Tyson Fisher was hit by a pitch,
Nick Adams greeted relieverEric Skufka with a base hit to plate Mintken with the tying run.
Parry then worked a walk to load the bases for Martin's heroics. The sophomore catcher jumped on a 2-0 fastball from Sean Peery for his third home run of the season and second grand slam, making the score 12-8.
SDSU added a pair of insurance runs in the eighth on a Rogers double and Fisher sacrifice fly.
Adams led SDSU's 15-hit attack with a 4-for-5 day at the plate, scoring three times.. Rogers, Mintken, Lewis and Hanigan all had two hits.
Ray was a triple short of the cycle for the Bears as he tallied three hits and scored three times in four at-bats. Symons also had three of UNC's 12 hits.
Morsching, pitching in his hometown of Rapid City, was credited with the victory after pitching two innings of relief. He struck out two and walked one in improving to 4-1.
Thielbar uncharacteristically struggled with his control in his five-inning start. The left-hander walked five and allowed seven hits.
Isaac Johnson pitched the final two innings for the Jackrabbits.
Jason Banks took the loss in relief for UNC.
The two teams are scheduled to close out the series Sunday with a 1 p.m. Mountain Time matinee.
