BROOKINGS, S.D. ? South Dakota State got its first win at the new Jackrabbit Softball Stadium on Wednesday, 2-0 over former North Central Conference foe Augustana, but the Jackrabbits could not complete the sweep, as the Vikings came charging back in the night cap to earn the split with a 6-0 win.
Jenna Marston got the start for the Jacks, and scattered three hits over the first four innings, struck out four and walked none before her teammates gave her some run support in the SDSU fourth.
Denise Leon took one for the team to open the inning, Brooke Postma followed that up with a walk and Brittany Postma hit a bunt single to load the bases for Steph Kuhl.
SDSU's all-time RBI leader came through with an infield single to the shortstop that scored Leon to give the Jacks a 1-0 lead.
Two batters later, with the bases still juiced, Amanda Fedson smacked a single to left center field allowing Brooke Postma to score the second and final run of the game.
Kim Westendorf came on to strike out one, walk one and give up two hits over the final three innings to earn her first save of the year.
Kuhl led the Jackrabbit offense going 2-for-3 at the plate with the one RBI.
Marston and Westendorf teamed up for their second combined shutout of the season, Marston got the win to improve her record to 9-14, while the Jacks improved to 13-27.
Krista Meyer (1-1) pitched all six innings for the Vikings, who fell to 16-24, took the loss.
After getting shutout in Game 1, Augustana opened the Game 2 scoring in the second inning, when Kayla Henke smacked a two-run home run over the fence in left center field to stake the Vikings to a 2-0 lead.
Augie tacked on two more in the third on a Jessica Cooper triple to put the Vikings on top 4-0.
They added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth on an Alicia DeHoogh single up the middle to reach the final 6-0 score.
Afton Murray (8-11) earned the complete game shutout for the Vikings, giving up just two hits, two walks and a strikeout.
