FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- The South Dakota State University baseball team completed a weekend sweep at future Mid-Continent Conference opponent IPFW, sweeping a doubleheader by scores of 14-2 and 10-2 Sunday afternoon.
Tyson Fisher was 4-for-5 with two home runs and drove in six runs in the opener. The junior first baseman put the jackrabbits on the board in the top of the first inning, homering to right field with
Jake Rogers aboard.
The Jackrabbits took advantage of three IPFW errors in the third inning to build a 4-0 lead, then tacked on three more in each of the fourth and fifth innings to go up 10-0.
Tim Hanigan hit a two-run double in the fourth and Fisher followed with a run-scoring single.
Korby Mintken's three-run home run accounted for the scoring in the fifth.
That would be plenty of run support for
Isaac Johnson, who made his first start of the season. The sophomore right-hander allowed two hits and three walks, while striking out two, in five innings.
SDSU made it 14-0 in the seventh as Hanigan doubled in the first run of the frame and Fisher belted a three-run homer to left center.
The Mastodons' lone runs came in the bottom of the seventh on a two-run double by Ryan Beer against reliever
Erik Bess.
SDSU out-hit IPFW, 16-6, with
Tony Martin adding three hits, including a pair of doubles. Mintken was 2-for-3 and scored four times, while Hanigan was 2-for-4 and drove in four.
In the finale, the Jackrabbits broke open the game with a six-run fifth inning. Martin led off the frame with a home run to left, his third round-tripper of the series and sixth of the season.
Tim Hanigan made the score 7-0 with a bases-clearing double that scored three runs. Fisher would drive in Hanigan with a base hit for the final run of the inning.
SDSU, 24-15 overall, had taken a 2-0 lead in the second inning on back-to-back home runs by
Cal Lewis and
Craig Parry.
Mike Robinson was the beneficiary of the run support as the freshman left-hander picked up his second win of the season. He scattered six hits over five innings, walking three and striking out one. He was lifted after the fifth inning, in which he allowed both Mastodon runs on base hits by Jason Doerffler and Jared Davis.
Matt Baerlocher and
Dalton Decker each pitched an inning of scoreless relief to complete the sweep.
Hanigan, Martin and
Chris Iverson each tallied two hits for the Jackrabbits, who out-hit IPFW, 10-7.
The Mastodons dropped to 9-30 on the season.
SDSU returns to action with a four-game series May 4-6 at North Dakota State. First pitch Friday is set for 6 p.m. at Newman Outdoor Field in Fargo.
