LINCOLN, Neb. ? South Dakota State returned to action on Monday after a 14-day weather induced break for a double-header in Lincoln, Neb. against the Cornhuskers, who used one inning in each game to sweep the Jackrabbits 4-1 and 2-1.
Jenna Marston took the ball in Game 1 and took a no-hitter into the fourth inning, but the ?Huskers capitalized on three straight infield hits to load the bases, which set-up Devin Porter, who came into the game mired in a 2-for-30 slump.
Porter broke out of her slump with Nebraska's fourth straight hit of the inning, a two RBI double that put the ?Huskers up 2-0.
Two batters later, Jamie Waldecker belted Nebraska's fifth hit of the inning, a single to center field that scored the third run of the inning. They would tack on one more to take a 4-0 lead after four full innings.
Kiley Schwedhelm broke up Ashley DeBuhr's no-hit bid with one out in the top of the fifth with an infield single to the shortstop to get things going for the Jacks.
Schwedhelm advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on a Teresa Howell double to the gap in left-center field that got the Jacks on the board, but still down 4-1.
DeBuhr settled down after that, and did not allow a hit the rest of the game on her way to the win.
Jenna Marston pitched a complete game for the Jacks and took the loss. Marston gave up six hits, four runs, struck out four and walked one.
Nebraska jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in Game 2 with a pair of unearned runs in the first inning.
Steph Kuhl countered in the top of the second with her SDSU best 24th career home run, (4th of the season) a leadoff solo shot that got the Jacks within one at 2-1.
The pitchers took over after that, and even though the Jackrabbits put runners in scoring position in the third, fourth, fifth and seventh innings, they could not push a run across and the Cornhuskers held on for the 2-1 win.
Molly Hill pitched a complete game for the Cornhuskers to earn the win.
Jenna Marston, who pitched her second complete game of the day, took the loss. Marston scattered seven hits, gave up two runs, both unearned, struck out one and walked three for the Jacks, who fall to 10-20 with the two losses.
SDSU returns to action against another Big 12 opponent on Tuesday with a double-header against Iowa State.
First pitch from Ames, Iowa is scheduled for 3 p.m. Weather permitting.
