BROOKINGS, S.D. ? South Dakota State sophomore Jenna Marston got plenty of run support and won two games on Tuesday, as the Jackrabbits swept Dakota State in a doubleheader at the Jackrabbit Softball Stadium. SDSU won the first game 9-2 and the night cap 8-0 in five innings.
The Trojans opened the Game 1 scoring when Jessie Klingenberg smacked a two RBI single to centerfield to put the visitors on top 2-0.
It stayed 2-0 DSU until the Jacks erupted for eight runs in the fourth, sending 12 batters to the plate in the process.
Brittany Postma opened the inning and then scored on a Samantha Heinzman double in the next at bat to get the Jacks within one at 2-1.
Two batters later, and with Heinzman on third, Steph Kuhl hit a sacrifice fly to left field, Heinzman tagged and scored to tie the game at two.
Kiley Schwedhelm followed that up with her first triple of the season, which brought up Heinzman, who doubled to left, allowing Schwedhelm to score the go-ahead run.
After Howell stole third, Jessica Vineyard hit an infield single and stole second to put two runners in scoring position for Brooke Postma, who laced a double into left, scoring Howell and Vineyard to put the Jacks up 5-2.
The fifth run of the inning brought in a new Trojan pitcher, but got a similar result. Amanda Fedson singled Brooke Postma home in the next at-bat to give the Jacks a 6-2 lead.
Fedson then stole second, and Brittany Postma followed that with her second hit of the inning, and infield single that advanced Fedson to third.
Brittany Postma then stole second, which allowed Fedson to score on a throwing error, giving SDSU a 7-2 lead.
The eighth and final run of the inning came when Heinzman got her second hit of the inning, a single to center field, allowing Brittany Postma to score her second run of the inning.
The Jacks tacked on one more run in the fifth, when Howell triples home Schwedhelm, who hit a one-out single to get on base.
Marston, who pitched four innings, giving up six hits, two runs, striking out three and walking one, earned the win.
Schwedhelm made her first pitching appearance of the season, giving up just one hit over the final three innings to earn the save.
Howell led the Jacks offensive attack, going 3-for-3, including a double, triple, stolen base, two RBI and a run scored.
Brittany Postma, Heinzman and Schwedhelm all went 2-for-3 in the win.
The Jacks improve to 15-32 on the season, heading into the second game of the doubleheader.
The Jackrabbits wasted no time getting the lead in Game 2, opening the contest with four straight singles.
Brooke Postma got the first single, and then parlayed it into a double before another pitch could be thrown.
Fedson followed that with a bunt single, allowing Brooke to advance to third and eventually score an error.
Brittany Postma bunted the third straight single, which allowed Fedson to advance to third.
Brittany then stole second to get two runners in scoring position for Heinzman, who capitalized on the opportunity with a two-RBI single up the middle, scoring Fedson and Brittany to give the Jacks an early 3-0 lead.
SDSU padded the lead in the fourth, when Denise Leon single home Schwedhelm to put the Jacks on top 4-0.
Dakota State starter Sara Gibson sat down the first two SDSU batters in order to start the bottom of the fifth, but Steph Kuhl ended that when she hit her first career triple, which started another two-out Jackrabbit rally.
Maggie Eilers came on to pinch run for Kuhl, and scored on a passed ball to make it a 5-0 game.
That brought up Schwedhelm, who drew a walk, before advancing to second on a Howell infield single.
Jessica Vineyard then came up to bat and singled home Schwedhelm for a 6-0 Jackrabbit lead.
After a Leon walk, Fedson ended the game with a single to right center field, scoring Howell and Vineyard for the final 8-0 score.
Marston pitched all five innings, giving up just one hit, while striking out five and walking one for her fourth shutout win of the season, improving her record to 12-17.
Vineyard led the Jackrabbit offense, going 2-for-2 with a triple, stolen base, RBI and a run scored.
Fedson went 2-for-4 with a stolen base, two-RBI and a run scored.
The Jackrabbits stole ten bases in the doubleheader, three by Brittany Postma, two by Fedson and Vineyard and one each by Brooke Postma, Howell and Heinzman.
The Jacks improve to 16-32 on the season with the sweep, and wrap-up the 2007 season on Thursday, when they host former North Central Conference opponent St. Cloud State.
First pitch from the Jackrabbit Softball Stadium is scheduled for 2 p.m.
