Despite a runner-up finish a year ago and the return of 18 seniors, the South Dakota State University football team has been picked to finish fourth in the 2007 Great West Football Conference race by the league's coaches.
Defending conference champion North Dakota State was selected as the league favorite with four first-place votes -- coaches could not vote for their own teams. Cal Poly, which won the first two GWFC championships, earned the other first-place vote to finish second. UC Davis, SDSU and Southern Utah rounded out the preseason poll.
The Great West was the top-ranked conference in the Football Championship Subdivision in the 2006 Gridiron Power Rankings conducted by CollegeSportingNews.com. The league finished second during its inaugural season in 2004 and ranked fifth among 15 conferences in 2005.
SDSU, which finished the 2006 season with a 7-4 overall record and 3-1 mark in Great West play, is scheduled to open the 2007 season Aug. 30 at Western Illinois.
