FARGO, N.D. -- South Dakota State started strong, but North Dakota State dominated the second half of the dual in downing the Jackrabbits, 35-10, in Western Wrestling Conference action Wednesday night at the Bison Sports Arena.
SDSU remained winless in duals, dropping to 0-6 overall and 0-3 against WWC competition. The Bison, wrestling in their WWC opener, evened its dual record at 7-7.
The Jackrabbits held the upper hand in the early going, winning the first three matches. Returning NCAA qualifier Ryan Meyer opened the dual with a 10-0 major decision over Mike Quamme at 165 pounds. Justin Retallic followed with a 4-2 decision over Shannon Fettig in the 174-pound weight class, and Tyler Sorenson made it three wins in a row with a 7-5 overtime decision of Kenny Moenkedick at 184 pounds. For Sorenson, it was his fourth consecutive dual victory since rejoining the team after the first semester.
From there, it was all Bison, who won the next seven weight classes. Jacob Bryce at 197 pounds and 125-pounder Eric Hoffman each recorded pins, and NDSU added a victory by forfeit at heavyweight and another by injury default.
SDSU is off from competition until hosting a double dual Feb. 2 at Frost Arena. The Jackrabbits will face Dakota Wesleyan at 4 p.m., before taking on WWC opponent Wyoming at 7.
