COLUMBIA, Mo. ? South Dakota State fell to Missouri for the second time in as many days at the Tiger Invitational on Saturday, this time by the score of 3-1.
Jessica Vineyard led the way for the Jackrabbits with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate, followed by Brooke Postma, who went 1-for-3, including SDSU's only RBI.
Jenna Marston pitched all six innings for the Jacks, giving up nine hits, three runs, no walks and six strikeouts, but took the loss to fall to 4-7.
The Jacks fall to 4-8 heading into Saturday night's game with Boston University. Mizzou improves to 13-6 with the win.
SDSU opened the scoring in the third, when Vineyard opened the inning with a triple to deep center field, and then scored two batters later on a Postma single just over the second baseman's glove into right-center field.
The Tigers countered with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a 2-1 lead, and then added an insurance run in the fifth to seal the win.
Terriers outlast the Jacks in the nightcap
Dani
Broshar and Sam Heinzman both hit their first career homeruns, but
South Dakota State came up four runs short in a 10-7 loss to Boston
University in the Jackrabbits final game of the Tiger Invitational in
Columbia, Mo.
The loss drops the Jacks to 4-9 on the season,
heading into play next weekend at the Shocker Invitational in Wichita,
Kan. The Terriers improve to 3-6 with the win.
Trailing 1-0
after a half inning, Heinzman opened the Jackrabbit half of the first
inning by drawing a walk. She then stole second and third, before a
Jessica Vineyard bunt scored her to tie the game at 1-1.
After
holding the Terriers scoreless in the second, Broshar hit a one-out
homer over the wall in left field to put the Jacks on top 2-1.
The lead did not last, as BU pushed across a pair of runs in the top of the third to take a 3-2 lead.
Undaunted, the Jacks bounced right back with two more runs in the bottom half of the third.
Heinzman opened the inning with a solo shot over the wall in center to tie the game at 3-3.
Ashely Durazo drew a walk in the next at-bat and scored two-batters later on an illegal pitch to put the Jacks back on top 4-3.
After a scoreless fourth inning, the Terriers plated four runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth to take a 10-4 lead.
Still
down 10-4 in the bottom of the seventh, the Jacks loaded the bases with
two-outs, and watched Kiley Schwedhelm unload them with a double into
left field.
Schwedhelm's double got the Jacks to within three
runs at 10-7, but two outs already, the Jacks could not complete the
comeback.
Jenna Marston pitched her 11th complete game of the season for the Jacks, and took the loss to fall to 4-8 on the season.
Along with Broshar and Heinzman, who each went 1-for-3 with a homerun, Schwedhelm finished the game 2-for-4 with the three RBI.
The
Jackrabbits return to action on Friday at 10 a.m. against Iowa State at
the Shocker Invitational, and then play the host Wichita State
Schockers later on Friday at 3 p.m.
