CEDAR CITY, Utah ? South Dakota State junior Brooke Postma needed just one stolen base in Friday's Summit League doubleheader at Southern Utah to break the SDSU record of 47, she got two, as the Jacks split their conference opener, falling 5-1 in Game 1, and winning the nightcap 10-7.
Jessica Vineyard hit her first career homerun in the second game of the day, while Sam Heinzman hit her second for the Jacks, who enter Saturday's single game against the Thunderbirds with a 6-14 overall record.
SUU enters Saturday's series finale with a 5-17 overall record. Both teams enter with a 1-1 record in Summit League play.
Postma opened the first game of the day with a one-out single, and promptly stole her record-breaking 48th base. Vineyard knocked her home with a triple in the next at-bat, giving the Jacks a 1-0 lead.
Then the Jacks curse of scoring a single run in the top of the first and then letting the game slip away happened again, as Southern Utah scored four runs in the third to take a 4-1 lead.
The T-Birds tacked on one more in the fifth to make it 5-1, but the Jacks could only muster one more in the fifth, when an Ashley Durazo double scored Heinzman to make it 5-2.
Jenna Marston again went the distance for the Jacks, striking out six and walking three in the loss, which dropped her to 5-11 on the season.
SDSU did score first in Game 2, but they waited until the third inning, and they scored more than a single run. They scored four runs, and they did it with two swings.
Dani Broshar opened the inning with a single, setting the stage for Heinzman, who smacked an inside the park homerun to left field that put the Jacks up 2-0.
Brooke Postma followed that up with a single, and then stole her 49th career base, even though she did not need to, as Vineyard came up next and belted her first-career dinger over the wall in right field to give the Jacks a 4-0 lead.
Southern Utah did come right back to score three runs in the bottom of the inning, but the Jacks took them right back in the top of the fourth.
Brittany Postma drew a walk to open the inning, and advanced to second two batters later when Broshar reached on an error.
Both runners advanced into scoring position when Greta Stroh grounded out to the pitcher for the second out of the inning.
Heinzman came up next and drew a walk to load the bases, which brought up Brooke Postma, who reached on an error that allowed Brittany and Heinzman to give the Jacks a 6-3 lead.
Vineyard came up next and delivered a single to center field, and even though Brooke got thrown out trying to gain third base, Heinzman scored before the out to put the Jacks up 7-4.
The Jacks added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth inning on a two-RBI single by Vineyard, and scored again in the seventh Broshar RBI single.
As it turned out, SDSU needed all three of those runs, as SUU scored one in the sixth and three in the seventh before the Jacks snuffed the rally.
Heinzman finished the game with a 2-for-3 effort at the plate with homerun and two RBI. Vineyard went 3-for-4 with a homer and four RBI, while Broshar went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a two runs scored.
Kiley Schwedhelm gave up five hits and three runs in relief, but Marston earned the win. Marston scattered six hits, giving up four runs in the win, which boosts her record to 6-11.
The Jackrabbits and Thunderbirds return wrap-up the series on Saturday at Kathryn Berg Field with a single game scheduled to start at noon MT.
