PUEBLO, Colo. -- South Dakota State players Korby Mintken, Billy Stitz and Nick Adams combined for six hits and 10 runs batted in to lead the Jackrabbits to a 13-1 victory over Air Force in the first game of a baseball doubleheader Saturday.
Air Force came back to salvage a split with a 5-3 win in the nitecap. Both games were seven-inning contests. The two teams are scheduled to their weather-altered series Sunday with a single game at 11 a.m. MT at Runyon Field in Pueblo.
Stitz, a freshman from Burnsville, Minn., doubled in a run in the fifth inning and tripled in two in the third inning en route to driving in four runs. Mintken delivered a bases-clearing double and Adams added a two-run double to account for SDSU's five runs in the third inning. Adams, a senior from Lenexa, Kan., also topped the 200 mark for career hits in the opener.
Caleb Thielbar turned in his second consecutive strong outing as he struck out five and allowed only two hits in five innings of work.
Tim Hanigan added three hits in the Jackrabbits' 16-hit attack.
In the nitecap, Air Force scored twice in both the fourth and fifth innings to win, 5-3.
Robert Butler took the loss for the Jackrabbits, who dropped to 5-8 overall. Air Force improved to 6-9.
Tyson Fisher led SDSU at the plate with two of its eight hits, including a double.Mintken had his 13-game hitting streak dating back to last season come to an end.
