PROVO, Utah ? Ashley Durazo hit a double, Jessica Vineyard and Kiley Schwedhelm both hit singles, but that is all the Jackrabbits could come up with in an 8-0 loss to Brigham Young on Monday in Provo, Utah.
The loss drops South Dakota State to 6-16, while the Cougars improve to 14-11.
After sitting the Jacks down in order to start the game, BYU scored a pair of runs in the home half of the first on an Amanda Vance two-run homerun.
Durazo opened the second inning with a double to right field, buy BYU's Christine Zinanti struck out the next three Jackrabbit batters to end the inning.
BYU capitalized on a pair of Jackrabbit errors in the second to score two more runs, giving the Cougars a 4-0 lead after two complete.
Schwedhelm singled to start the Jacks half of the third, and advanced to second on a Greta Stroh sacrifice bunt, but a pair of groundouts ended any threat.
Jenna Marston retired the first two BYU batters in the third, but Angeline Quiocho put an end to that with a solo homerun over the centerfield fence.
That opened the floodgates, as the Cougars scored three more runs on three hits and a walk in the inning to take a commanding 8-0 lead.
Neither team scored again, and Zinanti sat the Jacks down in order in the top of the fifth to secure a home opening win for the Cougars.
The Jackrabbits return to action on Tuesday at 4 p.m. MT, in Provo, with a single game against Utah State.
