Jackrabbits play three at UNC

The South Dakota State University baseball team wraps up a stretch of 20-plus road games this weekend with a three-game series at Northern Colorado.
Action begins at 2 p.m. Mountain Time (3 p. m. Central) Friday at Jackson Field in Greeley, Colo. SDSU will be attempting to end an eight-game losing streak as it enters the matchup with a 5-15 overall record.
UNC is 7-17 overall after being swept in a two-game series at Nebraska on Tuesday and Wednesday.
The series concludes with games at 1 p. m. MT Saturday and noon MT Sunday.
THE SERIES:The Jackrabbits gained a 17-14 series advantage by winning all six meetings during the 2007 season. SDSU swept a three-game series in Rapid City April 20-22, then swept a two-game series in Greeley on May 17-18.The final matchup of the season came a week later at the Division I Independent Tournament in Orem, Utah, which the Jackrabbits won, 11- 6, en route to the tournament title.
The series began in 1973, when Northern Colorado defeated SDSU 10-1 and 24-4 at the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional in Maryville, Mo.
SCHEDULE CHANGES: Extended wintry weather has forced the Jackrabbits to reschedule their home opener, which was originally scheduled for April 1 against North Dakota at SDSU's new on-campus facility, Huether Field.That game has been moved to April 29 at 2:05 p.m.
Next weekend's Summit League-opening series against Centenary (La.) may be moved, depending on field conditions. Check GoJacks.com for further schedule updates.
COVERING THE RABBITS: For the third straight season, more than 30 SDSU baseball games will be broadcast live over the Jackrabbit Baseball Radio Network. None of this weekend's games will be broadcast on SDSU media outlets, although coverage is planned on Greeley-based KFKA 1310 AM and online at www.1310kfka.com.
Most SDSU broadcasts will be carried live on Brookings-based KJJQ 910 AM, with Tyler Merriam calling the play-by-play. Other select games this season will also be carried on KCCR 1240 AM in Pierre.
Every broadcast will also be available via the Jackrabbit Extra, a subscription service through GoJacks.com, the official website of South Dakota State University athletics. Monthly subscriptions for the Jackrabbit Extra, which includes live audio streaming, as well as various video features, are available for $9.95 per month or $99.95 for an entire year of coverage. An audio-only subscription also is available for $4.95 per month, with programming consisting only of live radio broadcasts.

IN TRANSITION:
The 2008 season marks the final year of a four- year transition process toward reclassification of the Jackrabbit athletics program from NCAA Division II to full Division I status. By meeting annual criteria outlined by the NCAA, SDSU will be eligible for Summit League and NCAA postseason competition during the 2009 season.
SUMMIT LEAGUE DEBUT: After playing the past three seasons as an independent, the Jackrabbits will begin play in The Summit League this spring. Due to the transition to Division I, SDSU is not eligible for the conference tournament until next season.
The Jackrabbits are slated to open Summit League play with a four-game series April 4-6 versus Centenary (La.), which is tentatively scheduled to be played at Erv Huether Field.
LAST TIME OUT: Darin Ruf led off the bottom of the 11th inning with his second home run of the game, giving Creighton a 9-8 victory over South Dakota State in college baseball action Tuesday afternoon in Omah, Neb.
The victory by Creighton overshadowed a valiant comeback by the Jackrabbits,who trailed 5-0 after the first inning. In the home half of the first, the Bluejays batted around against SDSU starter Jared Koch. Ruf drove in the first two runs of the game with a home run to right field, and Steve Winkelmann followed with a solo blast on the very next pitch. Joe Servais plated the fourth run of the inning with a double and later scored on a wild pitch.
SDSU tallied its first run of the game on a solo home run by Tyson Fisher with two outs in the third inning. For Fisher, it was his second home run of the season.
After Creighton countered with a run in the bottom of the third, SDSU tied the game at 6-all with a five-run fourth inning. Omaha native Tony Martin started the rally with a leadoff home run off Bluejay starter Greg Hellhake for his first round-tripper of the season.The next six Jackrabbit hitters also would reach base, highlighted by run-scoring singles from Justin Morar and Tim Hanigan, and a two-run pinch-hit double by Jesse Ayala.
The Bluejays regained the lead with a run in the bottom of the fourth, but SDSU took its first lead of the game with a two-run fifth inning. Nick Adams scored the tying run on a balk, and Ayala scored the go-ahead run on a base hit by Korby Mintken.
Creighton again tied the game in the seventh inning as Brett Mieras doubled off Jackrabbit reliever Zach Weber to score a run. Kirby Morsching later relieved Weber in the seventh and worked three more scoreless innings before giving up the game-winning home run in the 11th.
Jeremy Hauer, the sixth pitcher of the game for the Bluejays, hurled two scoreless innings of relief to earn the victory, improving to 4-1 on the season. He worked out of a two- on, one-out jam in the top of the 11th to keep SDSU off the board. Bluejay pitchers recorded 12 strikeouts in the game.
Ruf ended the game 3-for-5 with three runs batted in and three runs scored. He was one of five Creighton players with two or more hits as the Bluejays out-hit the Jackrabbits, 14-13.
Hanigan was 3-for-5 to lead SDSU at the plate. Mintken and Adams each tallied two hits.
TOUGH LUCK: SDSU has hung tough with quality competition in the last week, but has come up on the short end.The Jackrabbits' last four losses have been by a combined five runs, with the three most recent games decided by one run in the opponents' last at-bat. Two of the games have been decided in extra innings.
