GREELEY, Colo. ? Tyson Fisher's three-run home run capped a five-run seventh inning and gave South Dakota State the lead for good as the Jackrabbits won the first game of a baseball doubleheader, 9-7, against Northern Colorado Saturday afternoon at Jackson Field. UNC came back to win Game 2, 13-6, to salvage a split of the twinbill.
SDSU moved to 7-16 overall, while UNC ended the three-game series with an 8-19 overall record.
In the opener, the Jackrabbits trailed 6-4 entering the seventh inning. Freshman Billy Stitz opened the inning with a leadoff home run off UNC starter T.R. Keating, which was followed by consecutive singles from Jesse Ayala and Nick Adams. With Sean Peery on in relief, the two runners advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Tim Hanigan. Korby Mintken was then intentionally walked to load the bases, but before Fisher could complete his at-bat, the tying run scored on a balk. Fisher later homered to left center to clear the bases and put the Jackrabbits ahead 9-6.
Northern Colorado came back to put a run on the board in the seventh inning against Jackrabbit reliever Jared Koch, but Kirby Morsching pitched two scoreless innings to preserve the Jackrabbit victory with his second save of the season.
Trailing 3-0, SDSU gained a one-run lead with a four-run fifth inning. Adams, who was 3-for-5, singled with the bases loaded to score Jesse Ayala and Stitz, while Tony Martin also scampered home on the play after an error. The final run of the inning also scored on an error.
UNC gained the lead on a two-run home run by Andy Mees in the fifth inning, and built its advantage to 6-4 in the sixth on a solo home run by Erik Hegstad.
