WICHITA, Kan - South Dakota State dropped its first game of the day on Sunday 12-5 to Iowa State, but the Jackrabbits rebounded to beat UMKC 8-6 in the final game of the day to snap a nine-game losing streak, and leave the Shocker Invitational on a winning note.
Cyclones spin the Jacks Down one after a half inning, the Jacks plated a pair of runs in the bottom half of the first to take a 2-1 lead.
Sam Heinzman took one for the team to start the inning, and then advanced to second on a wild pitch before Ashley Durazo tripled her home. Durazo would score on an illegal pitch in the next at bat.
The Jackrabbit lead did not last long though, as the Cyclones countered with two runs in the second, one in the third and put the game away with five in the fifth.
The Jacks added three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, but ISU got them back in the top of the seventh to secure the weekend sweep.
Durazo finished the game 4-for-5 at the plate with a pair of singles to go along with a double and a triple, leaving her just a homerun shy of the cycle.
Brooke Postma went 2-for-3 with a run scored, but did not steal a base and remains tied with Ashley Kalina for the SDSU stolen bases record with 47.
Rabbits bounce the Roos Thanks to a six-run third inning in their final game of the tournament, the Jackrabbits snapped their losing streak with an 8-6 win over UMKC.
UMKC scored one in the first and two in the third to take the early 3-0 lead before the Jackrabbit offense came alive in the bottom of the third.
Stephanie Peters drew a one-out walk and Sam Heinzman followed with a single to center field. Both players would advance in the next at-bat on a wild pitch.
Durazo then came up with two runners in scoring position and knocked in Peters with single into right field to get the Jacks on the board.
After a Jessica Vineyard infield single loaded the bases, Kiley Schwehelm singled home Vineyard to get the Jacks within one at 3-2.
That brought up Dani Broshar with the bases still loaded, and she promptly unloaded them with a triple into the gap in right-center field. That scored three runs and put the Jacks on top 5-3.
Greta Stoh came up next and singled home Broshar for a 6-3 Jackrabbit lead before the inning ended.
UMKC got a run back in the top of the fourth, but the Jacks scored two in the bottom of the fourh.
Peters opened the inning with her second walk of the game, and then scored on a Heinzman triple in the next at-bat to give the Jacks a 6-4 lead.
Heinzman scored two batters later on a Vineyard sac fly to put SDSU on top 6-4.
UMKC scored single runners in the sixth and seventh innings, but stranded three runners down the stretch, as the Jacks hung on for the win.
Heinzman finished the game 2-for-4 with a triple and an RBI, while Broshar went 1-for-2 with a triple, a walk and three RBI to lead the Jacks in the win.
Jenna Marston pitched all seven innings for the Jacks, giving up eight hits, six runs, walking four and striking out three to improve her record to 5-8 on the season.
SDSU returns to action on Friday, when the Jackrabbits open Summit League play in Cedar City, Utah, with a doubleheader against Southern Utah.
