The South Dakota State University baseball team will carry a six-game winning streak into a four-game series against Summit League opponent Southern Utah.
The series begins Thursday, when the two teams meet at 2 p.m. Mountain Time for a single game at Thunderbird Park on the SUU campus in Cedar City, Utah. A doubleheader is slated for a noon MT start Friday, with the series finale to be played Saturday at 2 p.m. MT.
Five of SDSU's victories during its winning streak have come against Summit League opposition as it has upped its record to 13-16 overall. The lone unbeaten team in Summit League play at 5-0, the Jackrabbits opened their league slate by sweeping a four-game series from Centenary (La.) April 4-6 in Omaha, Neb. SDSU later defeated Oakland (Mich.), 8-5, on April 11 before the remainder of the series was canceled.
Southern Utah enters the series 18-14 overall and 5-2 in Summit League play. The Thunderbirds recorded a 14-10 victory at Brigham Young (Utah) Tuesday night.
THE SERIES: This week's series will mark the first time SDSU and Southern Utah have met in baseball.
In the preseason Summit League coaches' poll, SDSU was selected to finish fourth while Southern Utah was tabbed as the fifth-place team.
SCHEDULE CHANGES GALORE: With weather wreaking havoc across the Midwest, the Jackrabbits have been forced to make several changes to their schedule. Tuesday's game at Dakota Wesleyan marked the beginning of a stretch in which SDSU is scheduled to play 16 games in 16 days to close out the month of April.
The following games have been added or moved in recent weeks:
? Monday, April 21 vs. Presentation, 3:35 p.m. (Home Opener)
? Tuesday, April 22 vs. Dakota Wesleyan, 3:35 p.m.
? Monday, April 28 vs. Sioux Falls, 3:05 p.m.
? Tuesday, April 29 vs. North Dakota, 2:05 p.m. (DH)

COVERING THE RABBITS: For the third straight season, more than 30 SDSU baseball games will be broadcast live over the Jackrabbit Baseball Radio Network. None of this weekend's games will be carried, although coverage will resume April 23 on Brookings-based KJJQ 910 AM, with Tyler Merriam calling the play-by-play. The April 23 game against Minnesota also will also be carried on KCCR 1240 AM in Pierre.
All radio broadcasts will also be available via the Jackrabbit Extra, a subscription service through GoJacks.com, the official website of South Dakota State University athletics.
Monthly subscriptions for the Jackrabbit Extra, which includes live audio streaming, as well as various video features, are available for $9.95 per month or $99.95 for an entire year of coverage. An audio-only subscription also is available for $4.95 per month, with programming consisting only of live radio broadcasts.
Action photos of Jackrabbit games also will be posted online throughout the season and made available for purchase under the “Photos” heading at GoJacks.com.
IN TRANSITION: The 2008 season marks the final year of a four-year transition process toward reclassification of the Jackrabbit athletics program from NCAA Division II to full Division I status. By meeting annual criteria outlined by the NCAA, SDSU will be eligible for Summit League and NCAA postseason competition during the 2009 season.
SUCCESSFUL SUMMIT LEAGUE DEBUT: After playing the past three seasons as an independent, the Jackrabbits began play in The Summit League by sweeping a four-game series from Centenary (La.) April 4-6 in Omaha, Neb.
REMEMBERING KEVIN MORSCHING: The Jackrabbits will remember their former teammate, reliever Kevin Morsching, with a special tribute during their pre-game infield practice.
Morsching, the brother of current SDSU pitcher Kirby Morsching, was a reliever for two seasons. He died last August following a skateboarding accident in Brookings.
The Rapid City native would have been a junior this year, and likely would have been the closer out of the bullpen.
Last fall, the squad all wore Morsching's number ? 16 ? on their practice jerseys.
HOME AWAY FROM HOME: Inclement weather and unplayable field conditions have forced the Jackrabbits to move a series to Omaha, Neb., and the Creighton Sports Complex each of the past two seasons. Counting two games against Creighton, SDSU has compiled a 7-1 record at the CU Sports Complex since the start of the 2007 season.
FISHER HOMER STREAK: Jackrabbit first baseman Tyson Fisher put together a streak of six consecutive games with a home run earlier this season.
Fisher, a senior from Fortuna, Calif., began his streak with a home run March 25 at Creighton, followed by home runs in all three games of a series at Northern Colorado March 28 and 29. The streak reached six as he homered in the first two games of the series against Centenary (La.), before ending in the second game of a doubleheader with the Gents on April 5.
Fisher's six-game home run streak was two shy of the NCAA Division I record.
200 HITS: South Dakota State seniors Nick Adams and Tyson Fisher both reached the 200-hit milestone in March, becoming the ninth and 10th members of the Jackrabbit 200-hit club. The club will soon grow to 11 members as Korby Mintken
Adams notched hit No. 200 in the first game of a doubleheader March 15 at Air Force and enters this weekend's series tied for third on the Jackrabbit career hits list with Billy McMacken (1987-90) at 223. The left-handed batter from Lenexa, Kan., passed Doug Sehr (216 hits from 1991-94) for fourth place two weeks ago, while setting the Jackrabbit career record for at-bats, currently at 712.
Adams also ranks in a tie for fifth place in career games played. The outfielder has played in 187 career games ? tied with Micky Sehr (1994-97) ? and made 132 consecutive starts before being held out of the starting lineup in the middle game of the three-game series at Minnesota on March 22.
Fisher, a first baseman from Fortuna, Calif., recorded his 200th career hit in the opening game of the Missouri series on March 18, and has tallied 214 career hits entering play Thursday to rank sixth. He stands three hits away from passing Doug Sehr for fifth place.
Fisher has been the team's leading hitter each of the past two seasons, posting averages of .363 in 2006 and .387 in 2007.
Mintken, a senior from Blair, Neb., has notched a team-best 47 hits this season to increase his career total to 199. He currently holds the Jackrabbit career record for triples with 20 and has climbed to seventh in both career runs scored (157) and career stolen bases (38).
Senior outfielder Tim Hanigan could also reach the 200-hit mark by season's end. The Lincoln, Neb., product enters the Southern Utah series with 177 career safeties.
MARTIN FINDING HIS STROKE: After sitting out the first three weeks of the season because of illness, junior catcher Tony Martin has swung a hot bat in recent weeks. Over the last nine games, eight of which he has hit safely, the Omaha native has batted .588 (20-for-34) with five doubles and 11 runs batted in. He also has drawn nine walks for an impressive .674 on-base percentage.
Hitting .185 prior to his hot streak, Martin has raised his batting average to a team-best .388.
DOUBLES MACHINE: Jackrabbit second baseman Jesse Ayala has given the SDSU offense a boost over the last month with his extra-base prowess. Of Ayala's 23 hits this season, 12 have been doubles. He had a streak of five consecutive games with a two-bagger, including all four games of the Centenary series in early April.
Ayala had his nine-game hitting streak end when he went 0-for-4 at Dakota Wesleyan on Tuesday.
LIGHTS OUT: The Jackrabbit bullpen has been played a key role in SDSU's success within The Summit League. In five league games, Jackrabbit relief pitchers have combined to post a 3-0 record and 2.04 earned run average while logging 17 2/3 innings.
