OMAHA, Neb. ? The South Dakota State University baseball team completed a four-game weekend sweep of Centenary (La.), winning 7-1 Sunday afternoon in Summit League action at the Creighton University Sports Complex.
The Jackrabbits improved to 11-16 overall, 4-0 in The Summit League. Centenary dropped to 16-10 overall, 0-4 in league play.
Both teams' starting pitchers struggled to find the strike zone as SDSU took advantage of four consecutive one-out walks in the first inning by Centenary starter Johnny Noland to take a 1-0 lead. Tony Martin drew the last of the walks to force in Tim Hanigan.
SDSU took control of the game with a five-run third inning. Korby Mintken led off the frame with his fourth home run of the season. Craig Parry added a two-run double later in the inning, and Billy Stitz plated Parry with a single through a drawn-in infield. Stitz tallied the final run of the inning as he scored on a Centenary throwing error.
The Gents loaded the bases against SDSU starter Isaac Johnson via three consecutive walks with two outs. Reliever Matt Baerlocher entered the game with a 2-0 count and proceeded to throw three consecutive strikes to retire Calvin Sanchez.
Combined, the two teams issued 14 walks ? eight by Centenary and six by Jackrabbit pitchers.
Baerlocher was credited with the victory after throwing 3 1/3 innings in which he allowed one run on three hits. He struck out five and did not walk a batter.
The Jackrabbit offense was held without a hit after the third inning until scoring again in the eighth inning. Stitz led off the inning with a deep fly ball to center that glanced off the glove of center fielder Jomar Tabor. Stitz, who was the only Jackrabbit player with two hits, was credited with a double and scored on the same play after Tabor could not pick the ball up cleanly.
Zach Weber completed the game with two innings of relief, finishing a sparkling weekend by a Jackrabbit bullpen which allowed only two earned runs in 14 2/3 innings during the four-game series.
Ricky Imperiali posted two of Centenary's four hits, including a double.
The Jackrabbits are scheduled to play Creighton (
