The South Dakota State University baseball team will attempt to solidify its second-place standing in The Summit League as it plays a four-game weekend series at IPFW.
The series opener Friday has been moved ahead two hours to a 2 p.m. Eastern Time start at Mastodons Field in Fort Wayne, Ind. A doubleheader is slated for 1 p.m. ET Saturday, with the series finale scheduled for noon ET on Sunday.
SDSU enters the series percentage points ahead of Southern Utah for second place in The Summit League with a 7-6 league record. Overall, the Jackrabbits are 20-22 after dropping three of four games against league-leading Oral Roberts (Okla.) last weekend.
IPFW has posted a 12-31-1 overall record thus far, and is seventh in the eight-team league with an 8-12 mark. The Mastodons won the opening game of their four-game series at Oakland (Mich.) last weekend, before dropping the final three games.
THE SERIES: The Jackrabbits have dominated the series against IPFW, one that began with a 13-1 SDSU victory at the 2006 Division I Independent Tournament in 2006.
SDSU owns a 9-0 series advantage after sweeping two four-game series from the Mastodons in 2007. The Jackrabbits notched double figures for runs in all four games played in Fort Wayne last season, then made their only true home series of the season a successful one with a four-game sweep at Bob Shelden Field, outscoring the Mastodons, 40-18.
COVERING THE RABBITS: For the third straight season, more than 30 SDSU baseball games will be broadcast live on the Internet or over the Jackrabbit Baseball Radio Network. None of this weekend's series are scheduled to be broadcast, although all four games of next week's series against North Dakota State will be carried, with Tyler Merriam calling the play-by-play. Local radio coverage will be available on Brookings-based KJJQ 910 AM, with select games on Pierre-based KCCR 1240 AM.
All broadcasts will also be available via the Jackrabbit Extra, a subscription service through GoJacks.com, the official website of South Dakota State University athletics.
Monthly subscriptions for the Jackrabbit Extra, which includes live audio streaming, as well as various video features, are available for $9.95 per month or $99.95 for an entire year of coverage. An audio-only subscription also is available for $4.95 per month, with programming consisting only of live radio broadcasts.
Action photos of Jackrabbit games also will be posted online throughout the season and made available for purchase under the “Photos” heading at GoJacks.com.
IN TRANSITION: The 2008 season marks the final year of a four-year transition process toward reclassification of the Jackrabbit athletics program from NCAA Division II to full Division I status. By meeting annual criteria outlined by the NCAA, SDSU will be eligible for Summit League and NCAA postseason competition during the 2009 season.
SUCCESSFUL SUMMIT LEAGUE DEBUT: After playing the past three seasons as an independent, the Jackrabbits began play in The Summit League by sweeping a four-game series from Centenary (La.) April 4-6 in Omaha, Neb.
REMEMBERING KEVIN MORSCHING: The Jackrabbits will remember their former teammate, reliever Kevin Morsching, with a special tribute during their pre-game infield practice.
Morsching, the brother of current SDSU pitcher Kirby Morsching, was a reliever for two seasons. He died last August following a skateboarding accident in Brookings.
The Rapid City native would have been a junior this year, and likely would have been the closer out of the bullpen.
Last fall, the squad all wore Morsching's number ? 16 ? on their practice jerseys.
NEW DIGS: The Jackrabbits were able to play only six games at their new home facility, Erv Huether Field, so far in 2008. Playing on campus for the first time since 2001, the Jackrabbits opened the new ballpark April 21 with a 22-3 victory over Presentation College.
SDSU finished its home slate at Erv Huether Field with a 3-3 record. All three home losses came against league-leading Oral Roberts (Okla.).
FISHER HOMER STREAK: Jackrabbit first baseman Tyson Fisher put together a streak of six consecutive games with a home run earlier this season.
Fisher, a senior from Fortuna, Calif., began his streak with a home run March 25 at Creighton, followed by home runs in all three games of a series at Northern Colorado March 28 and 29. The streak reached six as he homered in the first two games of the series against Centenary (La.), before ending in the second game of a doubleheader with the Gents on April 5.
Fisher's six-game home run streak was two shy of the NCAA Division I record.
200 HITS: South Dakota State seniors Nick Adams and Tyson Fisher both reached the 200-hit milestone in March, becoming the ninth and 10th members of the Jackrabbit 200-hit club. The club grew to 11 members as Korby Mintken reached the plateau April 18.
Adams notched hit No. 200 in the first game of a doubleheader March 15 at Air Force and enters the weekend second on the Jackrabbit career hits list at 237, trailing Greg Geary (256 hits from 2002-05) for the top spot. A left-handed batter from Lenexa, Kan., Adams has set the Jackrabbit career record for at-bats, currently at 754.
Adams also set the Jackrabbit career mark for games played last weekend against Oral Roberts (Okla.) by playing in his 200th game in the series finale. The outfielder made 132 consecutive starts before being held out of the starting lineup in the middle game of the three-game series at Minnesota on March 22. Doug Sehr, who played at SDSU from 1991-94, held the previous career games played record at 198.
Fisher, a first baseman from Fortuna, Calif., recorded his 200th career hit in the opening game of the Missouri series on March 18, and has tallied 231 career hits entering play Friday to rank third on the Jackrabbit charts. Fisher, who ranks second in career runs scored with 168, has been the team's leading hitter each of the past two seasons, posting averages of .363 in 2006 and .387 in 2007.
Mintken, a senior from Blair, Neb., has notched 58 hits this season to increase his career total to 208 ? eighth on the career list after passing Chris Studer (209 hits from 1999-2002) in the series finale May 4 against Oral Roberts. Mintken currently holds the Jackrabbit career record for triples with 20 and has climbed into third place on the career runs scored list with 166. He also stands sixth in career stolen bases with 43.
Senior outfielder Tim Hanigan could also reach the 200-hit mark by season's end. The Lincoln, Neb., product enters the weekend with 189 career safeties.
PARRY ON A TEAR: Jackrabbit third baseman Craig Parry had an April to remember at the plate. A senior from Colstrip, Mont., Parry hit safely in 13 of the team's 15 games during the month, compiling a .468 batting average (29-of-62) to raise his season average from .323 to .381. Of his 29 hits, 20 went for extra bases ? 11 doubles, four triples and five home runs for a slugging percentage of .984.
His has set a new Jackrabbit single-season record with 20 doubles, bettering the previous record of 18 shared by three players: Billy McMacken in 1990, Russ Langer in 2000 and Greg Geary in 2004.
BAERLOCHER DELIVERS: The Jackrabbit pitching staff has benefitted from the emergence of Matt Baerlocher. Serving in multiple roles as a spot starter, long reliever and situational left-hander out of the bullpen, the senior southpaw leads the team with 20 appearances and is tied for the team lead in victories with a 4-1 record. Baerlocher won his fourth consecutive decision as he pitched the first three innings of SDSU's 21-4 victory over Sioux Falls on April 29.
MARTIN HEATS UP: Catcher Tony Martin has taken over the title of team's hottest hitter as the calendar has flipped to May.
A junior from Omaha, Neb., Martin was the only Jackrabbit player to hit safely in all four games against Oral Roberts, compiling three multi-hit games along the way as he hit .533 (8-of-15) with two doubles, three runs scored and three runs batted in during the four-game set.
He currently leads the team with a .387 batting average.
LARSON FINDS THE ZONE: Senior right-hander Christian Larson has given the Jackrabbits some quality outings upon his return to the Jackrabbit rotation.
In his last five appearances ? four starts ? Larson has posted a 2-0 record and 3.91 earned run average in 23 innings pitched. Called into duty as a front-line starter following a season-ending injury to Robert Butler, Larson has struck out 14 and walked only two batters since an April 4 start against Centenary (La.).
In two appearances last week, Larson pitched the first five innings to earn the victory at Minnesota on April 30, then hurled 4 1/3 innings of scoreless relief in the first game of a scheduled doubleheader against Oral Roberts (Okla.) on May 3.
