Lincoln, Neb. ? The Jackrabbit wrestling team battled back from a 9-0 deficit to tie the match, but Maryland proved to be too much as they defeated South Dakota State 29-9 in dual action hosted by the University of Nebraska, Sunday afternoon at the NU Coliseum.
The Jacks surrendered the 165-pound weight class and Justin Retallic dropped a 6-3 decision to give Maryland a 9-0 lead, but the Jacks would not lay down as SDSU won three decisions in a row to tie the score at 9-all.
Freshman Zach Blindert scored a takedown in the first period which proved to be enough as he outlasted Ryan Gray, 2-1. The 184 pounder ups his dual record to a perfect 8-0 on the year and 22-4 overall.
Notching what could be his biggest victory as a Jackrabbit, Tyler Sorenson scored a 13-11 victory over No. 11 Hudson Taylor. After going up 12-6 in the third period, Taylor recorded a reversal and a two-point near fall to get within two at 12-10. Sorenson would end with an escape and Taylor would receive a riding time bonus to end the scoring, completing the upset. In 2008, Taylor placed third at the National Championships at 197 pounds.
Heavyweight Jason Stripling continued his dual prowess, improving to 11-0 after recording a 4-3 victory over Patrick Gilmore. Stripling improves to 23-8 overall on the season.
In the end, Maryland would prove to be too much as the Terrapins went on to score victories in the remaining weight classes to notch the 29-9 victory.
