The South Dakota State University wrestling team will host their first home conference wrestling dual this season at Frost Arena against the Northern Colorado Bears.
The Bears enter the dual 3-9-1 on the season after defeating North Dakota State last night by a score of 18-16. The win was their first in conference action.
SDSU enters the match winning their last dual Thursday at Frost Areana against in-state foe Nothern State, 40-3.
SERIES RECORDS: Tonight's meeting between Northern Colorado and SDSU will mark the 27th meeting between the two schools, dating back to the 1967-68 season. Last season, the Bears defeated the Jacks 29-10 in Greeley, Colo. However, SDSU still leads the all-time series 18-8.
LILES HONORED: On Jan. 7, 2009, head wrestling coach Jason Liles became the all-time leader in wins at SDSU with 135, recording a 31-15 win over the Delaware St. Hornets. Liles was honored before Thursday's match against Northern State with an etched trophy to commemorate his accomplishment.
The win over took long-time Jackrabbit coach Warren Williamson. The seasoned coached led SDSU for 16 seasons from 1957-68 and 70-73. During his run, he amassed a 134-74-9 record and three North Central Conference titles.
Liles' record currently stands at 139-104-3 in his 16th season with the Jacks.
SORENSON AND STRIPLING HONORED BY WCC:
Stripling: The Western Wrestling Conference announced South Dakota State's Jason Stripling and Wyoming's Michael Martinez as Co-Wrestlers of the Week for their efforts from Jan. 5-11.
Stripling, a senior heavyweight from Minneota, Minn. (Minnesota HS), posted a 5-0 record for the Jackrabbits during an east coast swing. Stripling's 5-0 record, including four by fall, led SDSU to five team wins on the week over Delaware St., Virginia Military Institute, Franklin & Marshall, American International and Sacred Heart.
In action on Wednesday, Stripling posted a 2-0 record with wins over Leon Barrow of VMI by fall at 4:52 and Jamar Beckett of Delaware St. at 3:59. At the Franklin & Marshall quadrangular on Saturday, Stripling went 3-0, including two by fall. His first win came by decision over Franklin & Marshall wrestler Nicolas Somers, 3-0. He then went on to win two in a row by fall over American International's Kelvin Valencia at 5:47 and Sacred Heart's Bill Beirmeister at 3:27.
Sorenson: South Dakota State University's Tyler Sorenson, from Garretson, S.D., has been named the Western Wrestling Conference's Wrestler of the Week (Jan. 21) after defeating No. 11 ranked Hudson Taylor of Maryland, Saturday in Lincoln, Neb.
Notching his biggest victory as a Jackrabbit, the 197-pound Sorenson scored a 13-11 victory over Taylor. After going up 12-6 in the third period, Taylor recorded a reversal and a two-point near fall to get within two at 12-10. Sorenson would end with an escape and Taylor would receive a riding time bonus to end the scoring, completing the upset. In 2008, Taylor placed third at the National Championships at 197 pounds.
Sorenson is a perfect 6-0 in duals after coming back from injury to start the season and has earned a No. 16 ranking in the latest USA Today/Intermat poll.
LAST WEEK: Northern State - The South Dakota State wrestling team rattled off nine-straight wins en route to a 40-3 victory over Northern State in duals action at Frost Arena Thursday night.
The Jacks, who are wrestling at full strength for the first time this year, recorded a major decision, four wins by fall and four wins by decision on the night.
No. 16 rated (USA Today/Intermat) Tyler Sorenson remained perfect on the season with a win by fall at 3:36. The 197-pound junior won his second match by fall this season and improves his record to 6-0.
Senior heavyweight Jason Stripling also recorded a win by fall, taking out Northern's Jared Little at 2:36. Stripling, who leads the teams in wins, improves to 24-9 overall and 12-1 in duals.
Freshman Nick Flynn notched a pin dual against Ryan Larsen at 4:03 in the 149-pound weight class. Flynn, who also notches his first dual win, ups his record to 1-1 in duals and 8-15 overall.
In the most exciting match of the night, Dustin Walraven recorded a 20-6 major decision over Joe Hirt. The freshman 141 pounder had eight takedowns, a two-point nearfall, an escape and a riding time bonus to round out his night. Walraven is third on the team in wins this season with an 18-12 record and improves to 7-5 in duals.
Also notching victories for the Jacks were seniors Alan Marvin at 125 pounds and Weston Blasius at 157. Freshman Scott Elliott and Zach Blindert also recorded victories at 174 and 184 pounds, respectively. Elliott is second on the team in victories this season with a 22-4 record, including a 6-1 record in duals.
Head coach Jason Liles, who was honored before the match for becoming SDSU's all-time wins leader, improves the Jacks to 7-5-1 on the season while Northern falls to 3-3.

FRESHMAN IMPACT: Head coach Jason Liles has brought in seven freshman for the 2008-09 wrestling season, all of which have had an immediate impact.
Scott Elliot, from Derby, Kan., has had a breakout freshman campaign notching a 22-4 record, including a 6-1 record in duals. Elliot is second on the team in wins at his 174-pound weight class.
South Dakota native, Dustin Walraven, has had a similar impact on the wrestling program in his inaugural campaign. The Huron native has complied an 18-12 record, good for third highest on the team. He is 7-5 at his 141-pound weight class with one loss coming at 149 pounds.
Zach Blindert, from Salem, S.D., has found his form at 184 pounds for the Jacks. His 15-5 record is fouth best on the team. Blindert is 9-1 in duals on the season, which is good for second on the team.
Weston Ginther, a native of Lemmon, S.D., is 7-16 midway through the season with a 3-8 record in duals at 165 pounds.
STRIPLING CRACKS TOP-25: Senior heavyweight, Jason Stripling, cracked the SDSU top-25 all-time wins list after recording a pin over Jared Little of Northern State at the 2:36 mark. Stripling currently holds a 75-39-0 record, tying him with Doug Cox for 23th all-time. Cox wrestled at 158-pound weight class from 1983-86 and had a record of 75-59-2.
