Laramie, Wyo. ? The South Dakota State wrestling team traveled to the University of Wyoming for the Jackrabbits first road conference match of the season and were trampled 38-7 in Western Wrestling Conference action Friday night at the UniWyo Sports Complex.
The Cowboys jumped out to an early 33-0 lead taking the first seven decisions of the night. They recorded two wins by fall, two technical falls, one major decision, a forfeit and two decisions on the night.
The loss drops the Jacks to 7-7-1 on the season and 0-2 in the conference while the Cowboys notch their first conference win in as many tries, upping their record to 8-2 overall.
For the Jacks,
Tyler Sorenson stayed perfect on the season at 197 pounds, recording a 10-2 major decision over Mikel Hoopes. The junior from Garretson, S.D. is 8-0 on the season and is rated No. 16 in the nation at his weight class by Intermat/USA Today.
Senior
Jason Stripling improved his team-leading win totals to 26-9 overall and 14-1 in duals after defeating Jacob Scharbrough 3-0. Stripling was awarded two points for Wyoming stalling and received the riding time bonus to end the scoring.
Freshman
Scott Elliott came close to notching his first upset of his young career but came up short to No. 19 rated (Intermat/USA Today) Shane Onufer at 174 pounds. Elliot was within two points at 7-5 but couldn't came way with the victory was Onufer escaped with an 8-5 victory.
The Jacks look to avenge a 26-10 loss as they travel to take on Air Force in WWC action, Saturday, with the match starting at 7:30 MT.
