LAS VEGAS ? South Dakota State opened the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic in rainy Las Vegas with a 13-0 loss to Virginia on Friday afternoon and then lost to Portland State (Ore.) 4-0 on Friday night.
The two shutout losses drops the Jacks to 1-5 on the season heading into play on Saturday.
Ashley Durazo led the Jacks with a 2-for-3 effort at the plate against Virginia, while Stacey Evans and Krystal Higgerson each finished 1-for-2. Brittany Postma went 0-for-1 at the plate, but drew a pair of walks and stole a base, which moves her into second place all-time at SDSU with 47 career-stolen bases.
Jenna Marston took the loss for the Jackrabbits to fall to 0-3 on the season.
The Cavaliers opened with five runs in the first and then added three runs in the second to take an early 8-0 lead. They added four more in the fourth and one more in the fifth before the eight-run rule took effect.
The Jacks threatened with runners at second and third in the third inning but could not push a run across.
Brittany Postma opened the Portland State game wit a single to right field and advanced to second when Brooke Postma reached on a fielder's choice in the next at bat.
The Postmas moved up a base when Ashley Durazo grounded out to second in the next at bat to put runners on second on third with just one out. Dani Broshar came up next and drew a walk to load the bases, but Brittany got thrown out at home on a Kelsey Lunn fielder's choice for the second out and the Jackrabbit threat stalled.
Portland State capitalized on a pair of Jackrabbits miscues and a wild pitch to push two unearned runs across in the third to take a 2-0 lead and then added another run in the fourth with the help of two more SDSU errors.
The Viking's lone earned run came on a leadoff homerun in the sixth, while the Jacks went down in order in the seventh to give Portland State the 4-0 win and keep the Jacks scoreless for the second straight game.
Lunn led the Jackrabbits with a 2-for-3 effort at the plate with a double, but six SDSU errors more than made up for her day at the plate.
Chelsey Evans pitched all six innings, giving up six hits for one earned run with four strikeouts and two walks in taking the loss, which drops her to 0-2 on the season. SDSU returns to action on Saturday, with games against Southern Mississippi at 1:30 p.m. PT before taking on Louisville (Ky.) at 6 p.m. PT.
