LAS VEGAS ? South Dakota State ran square into perennial power and No. 4 UCLA on Sunday in its final game of the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic, as the Bruins made quick work of the Jackrabbits in a 12-0, five inning game.
The loss extends the Jacks losing streak to eight, as they fall to 1-8 on the season. UCLA improves to 7-2 with the win.
Amanda Kamekona got it going with a leadoff homerun in the top of the first to put the Bruins up 1-0.
Jackrabbit starter Jenna Marston calmed down after that and got a pair of strikeouts, but UCLA loaded the bases for Julie Burney, who unloaded them with one swing to put the Bruins up 5-0 after one inning.
After sitting the Jacks down in order in the second, Monica Harrison opened the second like her teammate did in the first, with a homerun that gave the Bruins a 6-0 lead.
UCLA then proceeded to load the bases for Megan Langenfeld, who hit a bases clearing triple to right field to put UCLA up 9-0.
The Bruins added three more in the third for a 12-0 lead before SDSU got something going in the top of the fourth.
Brittany Postma broke up Donna Kerr's no-hit bid with a single up the middle and then advanced to second on an Ashley Durazo single two batters later. The rally stalled from there, as Kerr struck out the final two Jackrabbits to end the threat.
Pam Nicholson, who came on in relief in the third inning, sat the Bruins down in order in the fourth, and the Jacks did draw two walks in the top of the fifth, but they could not plate a run.
Marston took the loss for the Jacks and falls to 0-4 on the season.
SDSU returns to action next weekend at the Tulsa Select Festival in Tulsa, Okla., with games against Creighton, St. Louis, Louisiana-Monroe and host Tulsa.
