OMAHA, Neb. ?
Jesse Sawyer and
Joel Blake each hit two-run home runs, leading South Dakota State to a 4-2 victory over Creighton in the opening game of a doubleheader Sunday afternoon at the CU Sports Complex.
The Bluejays came back to salvage a split of the twinbill with a 12-3 victory in the nitecap. Creighton moved to 5-12 on the season, while the Jackrabbits moved to 4-11 on the campaign.
In the opener, the Jackrabbits grabbed a 2-0 lead in the second inning as Sawyer homered to left field after
Tony Martin walked to lead off the inning.
Creighton cut the lead in half in the bottom of the third inning as Darin Ruf singled against Jackrabbit starter
Mike Robinson and came around to score on a Vicente Cafaro triple.
Blake's two-run blast came with one out in the fifth inning, scoring
Scott Hood, who led off the inning with a base hit.
Ruf doubled in the final Creighton run in the fifth inning, but Robinson preserved the lead by inducing Nick Becker to ground into an inning-ending double play.
Robinson worked the first six innings to pick up the victory and even his record at 1-1 on the season. The junior left-hander scattered nine hits, walked two and struck out four batters.
Kirby Morsching pitched the final three innings to earn his first save of the season.
In Game 2, Creighton scored the final 10 runs of the game en route to a 12-3 victory.
After the Bluejays scored an unearned run in the bottom of the first inning, SDSU tied the game in the second.
Stephen Turner doubled and later scored on a passed ball, but the Jackrabbits could have had a bigger inning as Sawyer was thrown out at home on Turner's double.
SDSU gained a 3-2 lead in the fourth inning on a bases-loaded walk to
Eric Cain that plated Sawyer, and an RBI groundout by
Jeff Fish.
From there it was all Bluejays as Creighton took the lead with a two-run fifth inning and broke the game open in the sixth inning with four runs. Cafaro hit a two-run home run and T.J. Roemmich followed with a solo shot. The final run of the frame scored on an infield single by Jimmy Swift, who was 4-for-4 to lead the Bluejays' 17-hit attack.
Roemmich and Scott Thornburg hit back-to-back home runs in the seventh inning against Jackrabbit reliever
Blaine Alberta as part of a three-run frame.
Jackrabbit starter
Caleb Thielbar pitched five innings, but fell to 1-5 on the season. He allowed 10 hits and seven runs, also recording four strikeouts.
Brandon Koenigstein hurled 3 2/3 innings of scoreless relief to earn the victory for Creighton.
Turner had three of the Jackrabbits' nine hits.
