LOUIS ? Junior Tyler Sorenson became only the second South Dakota State
wrestler to qualify for the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships, but fell
in consecutive matches, Thursday, at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis, Mo.
The
Garretson native dropped an 8-4 decision in his first match against No. 4
seeded Tyrel Todd of Michigan and fell in the night session to Patrick Bradshaw
of Edinboro University 6-4, ending his tournament run.
Todd,
who entered the tournament with a 21-5 record and was the fourth-seeded
wrestler at 197 pounds, jumped out to an early 2-1 lead after the first period,
scoring a takedown to Sorenson's escape. Todd continued to extend his lead in the
second, scoring an escape and a takedown to take a 5-1 lead into the final
period.
In
the third, Sorenson's comeback fell short has he was only able to score a
takedown and an escape to Todd's takedown and riding time bonus, ending the
scoring at 8-4.
In
the final match of the night, Bradshaw jumped out to an early 4-1 lead midway
through the second period. Sorenson countered with an escape and a
reversal to knot the match at 4-all late in the third. With 30 seconds
remaining, Bradshaw scored an escape and added 1:43 of riding time to take the
6-4 decision.?
Sorenson
drops to 14-4 on the season, with all of his losses coming to opponents in the
national tournament.?
